"Fantomas contra Disney" / Ana Merino. p. 203-224 in La
Revista Latinoamericana de Estudios sobre la Historieta, v.
1, no. 4 (Dic. 2001).
-- Abstract: "In the
seventies various perspectives in Latin America introduce
comics as part of their analytical landscapes. This essay
compares the anti-imperialist assertions of Dorfman and
Mattelart and the creative literary appropriation of comics
exemplified in Cortázar. In analyzing the key texts of both
visions, 'How to Read Donald Duck' and 'Multinational
Vampires,' I am trying to compare their expressive
dimensions and efforts to criticize the society of their
times. For Dorfman and Mattelart, the Disney comics were a
space to be rejected. Meanwhile, for Cortézar, Fantomas
comics were a narrative space full of creative
possibilities that helped him to develop a discourse deeply
compromised by the dramas of 1970's society." -- Abstracts

(Feb. 1956). -- Summary: While out in public watching a
parade, Wonder Woman is made drowsy by a bright light. She
wakes up in a nearby park with an indestructible mask on

off. Then she notices a message in Braille on the surface
of the mask, which says it will explode after 6 hours on
her face. The media spread the story of her exploding mask.
She visits every print shop that can print in Braille until
she comes to one printer who doesn't seem afraid of her.
She sits with him until the deadline, and sure enough, he
jumps up and defuses the mask. The printer is wearing a
mask too, and he is revealed as the master criminal

Le Paradis Terrestre. English.
The Rabbi's Cat. 2 / Joann Sfar ; color by Brigitte
Findakly. -- New York : Pantheon Books, 2008. -- 130 p. :
col. ill. ; 27 cm. -- Originally published in France by
Dargaud, Paris, in two volumes: 'Le Chat du Rabbin. 4, Le
paradis terrestre' in 2005 and 'Le Chat du Rabbin. 5,
Jérusalem d'Afrique' in 2006. -- Summary (from dust
jacket): "Joann Sfar's beloved, humorous, and wise talking
cat is back for more beautifully illustrated adventures in
Algiers and across Africa in the 1930s. While the rabbi is
away, his cat tags along with Malka of the Lions (the
rabbi's enigmatic cousin), who roams the desert with his
ferocious-on-demand lion. Some believe Malka to be a pious
Jew, others think he's a shrewd womanizer, but the cat will
be the one to discover the surprising truth." "Back in
Algiers, the rabbi's daughter, Zlabya, and her new husband
fill the house with their fighting, while the city around
them fills with a rising tide of anti-Semitism. On a whim,
the rabbi's cat, the rabbi, a sheik (also a cousin of the
rabbi), and a very misplaced Russian painter set out on a
fantastic journey (even encountering a young reporter named
Tintin in the Congo) in search of an African Jerusalem. It
turns out to be very fortuitous that the rabbi's cat is not
just a talking cat, but a multilingual talking cat." --

"Originally published in single magazine form in All-Star

Jonah Hex 2, 4." -- "Jonah Hex was one of the most feared
bounty hunters in the West. A former confederate soldier,
the grotesque gunslinger was a man without country, without
friends, without mercy. The post-war West was a vicious
quagmire of violent men like Quentin Turnbull and the
outlaw called El Papgayo. They ruled through fear and
brutality, and desperate towns searched for a hero, but all
they found was Hex. He'd weathered the worst this world had
to offer, and only his quick wits and sharpshooting kept
him alive. For a price, his hired gun could deliver
salvation, or just as swiftly, damnation. This volume
