Opium / Daniel Torres ; translation by Elias Garcia and Mike Steel. -- London : Knockabout Publications, 1986. -- 55 p. : ill. ; 30 cm. -- A mock interview with Daniel Torres about his creative process forms a framing sequence of seven pages. -- Translated from Spanish, where it appeared in El Víbora. -- Detective genre. -- Call no.: PN6777.T6 O63 1986

"Epidemic!" p. 7-19 -- Summary: A contagious disease strikes the city. Newscaster Ruben Plata identifies dogs as the problem, and all dogs are killed and thrown out windows. The epidemic continues, so next he identifies watermelons as the vector. After watermelons it's vinegar out the windows. An anonymous voice on the telephone has been giving him these tips, and even though they're all wrong Ruben Plata's public doesn't lose faith in him. In a traffic accident, a dying Chinese scientist tells Ruben, "bugs in water of opium," and gives him the address of an antique dealer. The dealer has an ancient papyrus that gives the cause and antidote for the disease. Before turning the information over to the authorities, Plata announces on the air that he has found the cure. Sir Opium and his thugs Acapulco and Ugh torture Plata's girfriend, Blanche White, to learn that the papyrus is sewn into Ruben's jacket. Right after the broadcast they beat and wound Ruben Plata, and steal the papyrus. Sir Opium identifies himself as the voice on the telephone, and says the epidemic is only the beginning.

"At More than 47 R.P.M." p. 21-30 -- Summary: Sir Opium buys a multinational record company and produces a devious, hypnotic music. Ruben and Blanche get out of the hospital and into disguise swearing to defeat this evil by destroying the master tape. Opium's henchwoman Acapulco and henchman Ugh kidnap Blanche and hold her in a refrigerator, forcing Ruben to sing for them. Ruben's record makes a lot of money. Ruben and Blanche escape, but Sir Opium says this has only been a demonstration.

"Paper Dreams" p. 33-38 -- Summary: Thugs kidnap the artists from both of the town's major comic book companies. The rival publishers blame each other, but right in the middle of their gun battle a daily comic book by a new publisher appears, featuring work by artists from both companies. Soon hordes of people are reading the new comic, and many are jumping out windows.

"The Last Vignette" p. 39-49 -- Summary: In the artist's ward of the hospital, Ruben and Blanche find the artist Back Peige, creator of "Captain Mars." Peige describes how he was kidnapped and forced to draw comics for the new company. The comics were then printed with magnetic hypnotic ink, that makes the reader identify with the hero. People are therefore jumping out of windows and getting into fights thinking they have superpowers. Ruben suggests to the old-line publishers that they give away free comics to try and win back some customers. This brings the culprit, Sir Opium, out of hiding, and Ruben follows him to his hideout in the old paper factory. The artists are freed.

"Epilogue" p. 50-51 -- Summary: Sir Opium and Ugh might have been killed, but the bodies are never found. Acapulco goes to the hospital for surgery. Ruben and Blanche get married.

the four greatest Chinese literary classics. It tells the
stories of a group of heroes who stand for different
classes of people daring to struggle against the corruption
and oppression of the times. Altogether there are 105 men
and three women among the notable characters in the
Liangshan band. These stories take place at the end of the
Northern Song period and describe vividly the people's
lives of love and hate, ties of friendship, loyalty and
enmity, etc. This book relives the most stirring chapters
in the novel which have become the subject of numerous
