   Estudios Sobre la Historieta, v. 7, no. 27 (Sept. 2007). --
industria cultural. Por último se plantea la emergencia del
cómic como expresión del héroe monderno." -- "Abstract:
This work presents a thesis that starts from the hypothesis
that the hero in El Eternauta is a collective and not an
individual hero. This first installment is an introduction,
and tries to give context to the reader. It is made up of
four sections. First is a brief history that traces the
heroes that predominated at different times. They are
characterized and connected with the necessities of their
times. Secondly, the main characteristics of the Argentine
popular hero are outlined. Then the changes that these
heroes have suffered are described as they have been taken
up by the cultural industry. Finally, we consider the
emergence of the comic as an expression of the modern

"De la Exaltación del Nacionalismo en la Historieta Colombiana
: El Caso de 'Hombres de Acero'" / Héctor Fernándex
L'Hoeste. p. 141-153 in Revista Latinoamericana de Estudios
   Sobre la Historieta, v. 7, no. 27 (Sept. 2007). --
"Abstract: This text discusses the case of Hombres de Acero
(Men of Steel), a comic strip sponsored by the Colombian
army, hoping to improve its image during the late 1990s and
early 2000s. The article details the promotion of a
reductive understanding of nationalism through this kind of
comics. Within the publication's context, the military
appear as immaculate champions of the motherland, honor,
and good customs, granting considerable weight to official
affiliation. Nevertheless, in the context of the civil
conflict of renowned complexity, such a portrayal involves
transcending risks in terms of identity, given the
astringent articulation of Colombian nationality." --

"El Caipira de Todos Nosotros : La Construcción de Sentido de
un Tipo Brasileño en las Historietas" / Gêisa Fernandes
   D'Oliviera. p. 154-164 in Revista Latinoamericana de
   Estudios Sobre la Historieta, v. 7, no. 27 (Sept. 2007). --
imagen." -- "Abstract: it is certainly not unique of
Brazilian culture to describe country people and their
environment in an idyllic way. Nevertheless, Brazilian
country men (caipiras) are part of a myriad of
   representations, assuming multiple significances. Comparing
the representation of caipiras in different artistic ways,
the present article builds a panorama of its evolution
mainly concerning its development in comics. We analyze the
Brazilian author Mauricio de Sousa, specifically his
character Chico Bento (Chucky Billy) and the links of this
comic figure to a certain national identity. Developing the
discussion on theoretical bases we can affirm to which
extent images influence and are influenced by reality,
according to its own limits and potentialities." --

"Pasiones y Temores de la Historieta Popular Mexicana" / Alij
Aquetza Anaya López. p. 165-176 in Revista Latinoamericana
-- "Abstract: The
Mexican popular comic of the last century exuded from its
pages a series of passions and latent fears in the country
concerning love, money, poverty and faith. The comics show
a society subject to the panic of never reaching imagined
ideal happiness. In the face of this portrayal, the humor
sector reacted by painting a society more concerned with
the flavor of life than with knowledge and power. The
tension between both tendencies (melodrama-humor) can be
interpreted as confrontation of the power to resist and
create new possiblilties for life, with adhering to
established ways. Was Mexican popular culture of the last
century concerned with maintaining emotional balance, or
with encouraging creative self-confidence? Although the
answer is not completely encouraging, neither is it totally
overwhelming." -- Abstracts as printed with the article,

"Abstract: Frenando Krahn is a notable Chilean artist, with
an interesting backgound, who has mainly developed his
career outside of his country. His drawings have a
universal significance. His political and poetic intuition
and his humourous intent that feed on human precariousness
are marvelous. Disquieting reality can be even more so
after exposure to the smiling sordidness of his stare.
Reality, both tragic and comic, is limitless especially in
his magnificent 'Dramagrmas,' as is the fantasy in his
   award-winning illustrations for children's literature." --

Lion-tamer Floyd Hilston is drafted into the Army. Not
wanting to leave his pet lion, Fearless Fagan, he keeps him
the woods near the base. One afternoon he and Fagan are
discovered by actress Abby Ames, who is playing a show at
the base. She guides the Army to Fagan, but they think it's
a publicity stunt and tow Fagan and his cage to the base.
After some misadventures, Fagan has to be transferred back

Coming Out, Again : Transition stories / Sabrina Symington. --
   London : Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2021. -- 1 v. : col.
ill. ; 26 cm. -- "We don't just come out once. We have to
come out continually throughout our lives. And as we grow
and change and reach a newfound understanding of who we
are, we come out once again in a whole new way. Following
the interconnected lives of a diverse queer community,
including asexual, polyamorous, trans and autigender
people, this empowering graphic novel explores the
multitude of ways a person's identity and relationships can
be expressed and can change over time. From Lily coming out
as a lesbian after coming out as a trans woman, to Leanne
embracing their genderqueer identity in later life, to Ty
navigating their queerness with their autistic identity,
these stories illustrate how life lived at the intersection
of gender, sexuality, race and class is often a journey
with many chapters. Full of love and pride - as well as
tips and advice, these witty, tender and inspiring
narratives prove there is no wrong way to be who you are,
so long as you are being true to yourself." -- Keywords

Patience & Esther : an Edwardian Romance / by S.W. Searle. --
   Chicago, Illinois : Iron Circus Comics, 2020. -- 327 p. :
col. ill. ; 21 cm. -- Bonus materials include: Bonus comics
A sweet distress and Ten years ; Behind the scenes,
author's notes on the research and creation of Patience &
Esther. -- Summary (from OCLC): Patience is a kindhearted
country girl, eking out a living in Edwardian England as
tremors of social change rock the world around her. When
she starts her employment in formal service on the grounds
of an opulent country manor, she has no idea that her own
personal revolution is about to begin. Selfless, dutiful,
and just a touch naive, she takes to both her place as a
parlor maid and to her new roommate, the bookish and
progressive lady's maid, Esther. In another time, the two
women would have kept one another's company forever in
their little attic bedroom, living out their days in the
employ of a Lord. But it's now the dawn of a new age. The
expanding empire has brought with it not only plundered
wealth, but worldliness and new ideas. Suffragists agitate
in the street, idle-rich bohemians challenge sexual mores,
and Patience and Esther slowly come to realize the world is
wider and full of more adventure and opportunity than they
ever imagined ... so long as they find the will to seize
it. Sensual, sweet, and beautifully illustrated, Patience &
Esther is a steamy period romance and an inspirational
erotic journey across the epic sweep of history, from the
end of a gilded age to the start of an uncharted future. --
