Graphic Girlhoods : Visualizing Education and Violence /
   Elizabeth Marshall. -- New York : Routledge, 2018. -- 143
   p. : ill. ; 23 cm. -- (Children's Literature and Culture)
   -- Includes bibliographical references (p. 121-138) and
index. -- "Drawing on a dynamic set of "graphic texts of
girlhood," Elizabeth Marshall identifies the locations,
cultural practices, and representational strategies through
which schoolgirls experience real and metaphorical
violence. How is the schoolgirl made legible through
violence in graphic texts of girlhood? What knowledge about
girlhood and violence are under erasure within mainstream
images and scripts about the schoolgirl? In what ways has
the schoolgirl been pictured in graphic narratives to
communicate feminist knowledge, represent trauma, and/or
testify about social violence? Graphic Girlhoods focuses on
these questions to make visible and ultimately question how
sexism, racism and other forms of structural violence
inform education and girlhood. From picture books about
mean girls like The Recess Queen or graphic novels like
Jane, The Fox and Me to Ronald Searle's ghastly pupils in
the St. Trinian's cartoons to graphic memoirs about
schooling by adult women, such as Ruby Bridges's Through My
Eyes and Lynda Barry's One Hundred Demons texts for and
about the schoolgirl stake a claim in ongoing debates about
   gender and education." -- Call no.: PN1009.5.V54 M37 2018

Wonder Women and Bad Girls : Superheroine and Supervillainess
Archetypes in Popular Media / Valerie Estelle Frankel. --
Jefferson, North Carolina : McFarland & Company, Inc.,
   Publishers, 2020. -- 237 p. ; 23 cm. -- Includes
bibliographical references and index. -- Summary (from
publisher via OCLC): "Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn, Shuri,
and Black Widow. These four characters portray very
different versions of women: the superheroine, the abuse
victim, the fourth wave princess, and the spy,
respectively. In this in-depth analysis of female
characters in superhero media, the author begins by
identifying ten eras of superhero media defined by the way
they portray women. Following this, the various archetypes
of superheroines are classified into four categories:
boundary crossers, good girls, outcasts, and those that
reclaim power. Modern superheroines fall under any of the
categories and with the push from the feminist movement,
superheroines are becoming more powerful and independent."

Gothic for Girls : Misty and British Comics / Julia Round ;
foreword by Mel Gibson. -- Jackson : University Press of
   Mississippi, 2019. -- 339 p. : ill. (some col.) ; 24 cm. --
Includes bibliographical references (p. 304-324) and index.
-- Summary (f rom OCLC): Today fans still remember and love
the British girls’ comic Misty for its bold visuals and
narrative complexities. Yet its unique history has drawn
little critical attention. Bridging this scholarly gap,
Julia Round presents a comprehensiv e cultural history and
detailed discussion of the comic, preserving both the
inception and development of this important publication as
well as its stories. Misty ran for 101 issues as a
stand-alone publication between 1978 and 1980 and then four
mor e years as part of Tammy. It was a hugely successful
anthology comic containing one-shot and serialized stories
of supernatural horror and fantasy aimed at girls and young
women and featuring work by writers and artists who
dominated British comics s uch as Pat Mills, Malcolm Shaw,
and John Armstrong, as well as celebrated European artists.
To this day, Misty remains notable for its daring and
sophisticated stories, strong female characters, innovative
page layouts, and big visuals. In the first book on this
topic, Round closely analyzes Misty’s content, including
its creation and production, its cultural and historical
context, key influences, and the comic itself. Largely
based on Round’s own archival research, the study also
draws on inte rviews with many of the key creators involved
in this comic, including Pat Mills, Wilf Prigmore, and its
art editorial team Jack Cunningham and Ted Andrews, who
have never previously spoken about their work. Richly
illustrated with previously unpubli shed photos, scripts,
and letters, this book uses Misty as a lens to explore the
use of Gothic themes and symbols in girls’ comics and other
media. It surveys existing work on childhood and Gothic and
offers a working definition of Gothic for Girls, a subgenre
which challenges and instructs readers in a number of ways.

UK Feminist Cartoons and Comics : a Critical Survey / Nicola
Streeten. -- Cham, Switzerland : Palgrave Macmillan, 2020.
   -- 274 p. : ill. (some col.) ; 22 cm. -- (Palgrave Studies
in Comics and Graphic Novels)-- Includes bibliographical
references and index. -- "This book demonstrates that since
the 1970s, British feminist cartoons and comics have played
an important part in the Women's Movement in Britain. A key
component of this has been humour. This aspect of feminist
history in Britain has not previously been documented. The
book questions why and how British feminists have used
humour in comics form to present serious political
messages. It also interrogates what the implications have
been for the development of feminist cartoons and fo r the
popularisation of feminism in Britain. The work responds to
recent North American feminist comics scholarship that
concentrates on North American autobiographical comics of
trauma by women. This book highlights the relevance of
humour and provides a comparative British perspective. The
time frame is 1970 to 2019, chosen as representative of a
significant historical period for the development of
feminist cartoon and comics activity and of feminist theory
and practice. Research methods include archival data
collection, complemented by interviews with selected
cartoonists. Visual and textual analysis of specific
examples draws on literature from humour theory, comics

storytelling stay exciting and innovative? How can genres
be kept vital? Writers and artists in the highly
competitive U.S. comics mainstream have always had to
explore these questions but they were especially pressing
in the 1980s. As comics readers grew older they started
calling for more sophisticated stories. They were also no
longer just following the adventures of popular
characters--writers and artists with distinctive styles
were in demand. DC Comics and Marvel went looking for such
mavericks and found them in the United Kingdom. Creators
like Alan Moore, Grant Morrison and Garth Ennis migrated
from the anarchical British comics industry to the U.S.
mainstream and shook up the status quo yet came to rely on
the genius of the American system." -- Call no.: PN6725

Spellbound : a Graphic Memoir / Bishakh Som. -- Brooklyn, New
   York : Street Noise Books, 2020. -- 151 p. : col. ill. ; 23
cm. -- Summary (Publisher's Weekly via OCLC): A graphic
novel that is part journal, part memoir, part fictionalized
retelling in an imagined parallel reality. The author quit
her job as an architect to work fulltime on a graphic
novel. The book presents the story her life growing up in
New York City as the child of immigrants from India, and
depicts her years as an alienated college student and later
as a comics artist that has to figure out how to make art
and pay the bills. However, Som substitutes Anjali, a
cisgender Bengali-American woman, for herself in a
narrative that tracks her transformation into a cartoonist
as well Som's internal process of coming to terms with
gender. -- Summary (from amazon.com via OCLC): "The
meticulous artwork of transgender artist Bishakh Som gives
us the rare opportunity to see the world through another
lens. Framed with a candid autobiographical narrative, this
book gives us the opportunity to enter into the author's
daily life and explore her thoughts on themes of gender and
sexuality, memory and urbanism, love and loss." --

   transgender women. -- Call no.: PN6727.S5885 S63 2020
