   Auflage. -- 63 p. : col. ill. ; 31 cm. -- Includes

entfernt.

Coolidge Rousmaniere and Matsuba Ryoko. -- London : Thames
   & Hudson, 2019. -- 351 p. : ill. (some col.) ; 26 cm. --
Catalog of an exhibition held at the British Museum,
   London, UK, May 23-August 26, 2019. -- Includes
bibliographical references and index. -- Summary (from
OCLC): Translated literally as 'pictures run riot', manga
refers to a form of Japanese narrative art that has grown
over the centuries to become a global phenomenon. Initially
referring to graphic prints, novels and comics, manga has
expanded beyond its original forms to include animation,
art, fashion and new media such as film and gaming, and has
international reach. Immensely popular with people of all
ages, manga is big business, with a turnover of GBP 3
billion in Japan in 2016. Arranged into six broadly
chronological, thematic chapters, this book traces the
origins of manga, from its beginnings to the present day.
Each section opens with an essay, followed by interviews,
features and manga selections. The first chapter focuses on
understanding manga through reading, drawing and producing.
The second explores the power of storytelling, examining
manga's presentation of reality through printed formats and
subject matter. The third chapter centres on the power of
the seen and the unseen worlds. Chapter four shifts the
attention from the art form directly to its role in
society, starting with manga's grass roots and moving on to
fandom, education and the future of manga in an uncertain
world. The penultimate chapter highlights the works of
sixteen select manga artists, forming a visual timeline of
seminal works. The final chapter examines manga's expanding
boundaries, including the avant-garde, media crossover and
manga's growing international reach and influence. Offering
a revealing insight into the world of manga, this book will
appeal to manga fans and to all those interested in graphic
art, in all its forms. -- Call no.: PN6790.J3M264 2019

Summary (from amazon.com via OCLC): "If you work hard
enough, if you want it enough, if you're smart and talented
and "good enough," you can do anything. Except get
pregnant. Her whole life, Lucy Knisley wanted to be a
mother. But when it was finally the perfect time,
conceiving turned out to be harder than anything she'd ever
attempted. Fertility problems were followed by
miscarriages, and her eventual successful pregnancy plagued
by health issues, up to a dramatic, near-death experience
during labor and delivery. This moving, hilarious, and
surprisingly informative memoir not only follows Lucy's
personal transition into motherhood but also illustrates
the history and science of reproductive health from all
angles, including curious facts and inspiring (and
notorious) figures in medicine and midwifery. Whether

Gravity Breaker / Jonathan R. Miller. -- United States? :
   Jonathan R. Miller, 2016. -- 216 p. ; 23 cm -- "For Isaac
Williams, nothing comes easy. From his dead-end job to his
one-bedroom apartment, life so far has been a steady grind,
one challenge after another. But that's about to change.
During a routine encounter with a police officer in
Oakland, Isaac makes a life-changing realization: He can
use gravity to do almost anything. To build or destroy. To
lift up or hold in place. To bend, straighten, or break
apart. Isaac is suddenly in command of a power beyond his
wildest imagination, the power to reshape the world around
him, something that--as a biracial black man from
hurricane-ravaged Mississippi--he has struggled to do his
entire life. Filled with newfound hope, Isaac immerses
himself in the experimentation process: testing his limits,
broadening his skill set, and refining his control, all in
secret. But Isaac, a single father of an eleven-year-old
daughter, is forced to reveal the extent of his abilities
when his daughter is attacked. This sets in motion a series
of events that strips him of everything he's worked so hard
for: his child, his job, and his home. Pursued relentlessly
by the authorities, Isaac is forced to use his abilities in
increasingly dramatic and dangerous ways to avoid capture
and reunite with his daughter, ultimately learning that the
   power he wields--though enviable--comes at a deeply
unenviable price." -- Superhero fiction, African American

Van Houten started as an editorial cartoonist for the Grand

Jessica Farm : volume 1 (January 2000-December 2007) / by Josh
   Simmons. -- Seattle, Wash. : Fantagraphics Books, 2008. --
96 p. : ill. ; 23 cm -- Summary: Hot on the heels of his
first graphic novel, House, Josh Simmons' Jessica Farm
fuses serialized adventure, fantasy and psychological
horror and stamps it with his signature macabre sensibility
in this atmospheric new graphic novel. Like a Lynchian take
on Alice in Wonderland, Jessica Farm opens with an exterior
of what could be any Midwestern farmhouse. Once inside, we
track our titular heroine as she bounds out of bed on
Christmas and goes about her morning routine, eventually
breakfasting with her grandparents. The banality of the
situation is subverted by a ratcheting sense of dread,
however, as we discover that Jessica's increasingly
nightmarish house is filled with creatures around every
corner: some whimsical, some sexual, some despairing and
some malevolent. Most terrifying of all is Jessica's
father, whose promise of presents under the tree is loaded
with the threat of violence. As in Simmons' debut graphic
novel, House, a large portion of the tension in this book
is generated not only by the sudden acts of brutality and
the fear of the unknown, but by the dynamics of Jessica's
relationships.Jessica Farm is an ambitious experiment in
world-building as conceived by Simmons. This book is the
first volume of a life-spanning comics project in which he
drew one page every month for the past seven years,
starting in January 2000--and will continue this project
for 50 years in total, making up the story as he goes and
releasing 96-page increments every 8 years until he amasses
a 600-page body of work. -- Alternative genre.-- Call no.?

   -- 56 p. : col. ill. ; 26 cm. -- Summary (from

are drawn from elements and mysticism found on the island
of Puerto Rico. The fictional character, Marisol Rios De La
Luz, is a Columbia University Earth and Environmental
Sciences Undergraduate student living with her parents Flor
De La Luz Rojas and Oscar 'Chango' Rios Velez in
Williamsburg, Brooklyn. She takes a semester of study

There she explores the caves of Puerto Rico: Ventana, La
Cueva del Indio, Las Cuevas de Camuy, La Cueva del Viento
and the caves at the Julio Enrique Monagas National Park.
At each of these caves she finds five similar sized
crystals. Atabex, the Taino mother goddess, appears before
Marisol once the crystals are united and summons her sons
Yúcahu and Juracan. Yúcahu, God of the seas and the

idealism, self-discovery, and loss under one of the
twentieth-century's most repressive political regimes. Set
against a backdrop of world-changing events during the
headiest years of the Cuban Revolution, Goodbye, My Havana
follows young Connie Veltfort as her once relatively
privileged life among a community of anti-imperialist
expatriates turns to progressive disillusionment and
heartbreak. The consolidation of Castro's position brings
violence, cruelty, and betrayal to Connie's doorstep. And
the crackdown that ultimately forces her family and others
to flee for their lives includes homosexuals among its
targets--Connie's coming-of-age story is one also about the
dangers of coming out. Looking back with a mixture of
hardheaded clarity and tenderness at her alter ego and a
forgotten era, with this gripping graphic memoir Anna
Veltfort takes leave of the past even as she brings
neglected moments of the Cold War into the present." --

Full Stop : le Génocide des Tutsi du Rwanda / Frédéric Debomy
   ; Emmanuel Prost. -- Paris : Cambourakis, 2019. -- 80 p. :
col. ill. ; 31 cm.
-- Historical
genre, about Rwanda. -- Call no.: PN6747.P717F8 2019
