Revision and the Superhero Genre / David Hyman. -- Cham,
   Switzerland : Palgrave Macmillan, 2017. -- 83 p. ; 22 cm.
-- (Palgrave Studies in Comics and Graphic Novels) --
(Palgrave Pivot) -- Includes bibliographical references and
index. -- "This book argues that superhero revision offers
new perspectives on the theory and practice of revision in
broader contexts, in particular composition studies. Key
developments in the history of superhero and composition
revision reveal that both are deeply embedded in questions
of narrative temporality. The book looks at three
unorthodox revision strategies: sideshadowing, in which
traditional tropes of superhero narratives are told with
   "new" characters that clearly evoke traditional ones;
excavation, the reintegration and reinterpretation of
elements and influences from earlier texts that have been
de-emphasized or written out of continuity; and homodoxy,
the narrative coexistence of inconsistent elements culled
from different versions of a character's textual history.
The ensuing cross-disciplinary exploration helps correct a
distorted stereotype of revision as a neutral mechanical
process, revealing it instead as a potent force operating
across a spectrum that ranges from restrictive adherence to
orthodoxies, to radical resistance against the primacy of
   tradition." -- Call no.: PN6725.H9 2017

Japanese Influence on American Children's Television :
Transforming Saturday Morning / Gina O'Melia. -- Cham,

"Examines the gradual, yet dramatic, transformation of
Saturday morning children's programming from being rooted
in American traditions and popular culture to reflecting
Japanese popular culture. In this modern era of
globalization and global media/cultural convergence, the
book brings to light an often overlooked phenomenon of the
gradual integration of narrative and character conventions
borrowed from Japanese storytelling into American
children's media. The book begins with a brief history of
Saturday morning in the United States from its earliest
years, and the interaction between American and Japanese
popular media during this time period. It then moves onto
reviewing the dramatic shift that occurred within the
Saturday morning block through both an overview of the
transitional decades as well as an in-depth analysis of the
transformative ascent of the shows Mighty Morphin Power
Rangers, Pokémon, and Yu-Gi-Oh!" -- Call no.: PN1992.8.C46

Representation of Genocide in Graphic Novels : Considering the
Role of Kitsch / Laurike in 't Veld. -- Cham, Switzerland :
   Palgrave Macmillan, 2019. -- 230 p. : ill. (part col.) ; 21
cm. -- (Palgrave Studies in Comics and Graphic Novels) --
Includes bibliographical references and index. -- "This
book mobilises the concept of Kitsch to investigate the
tensions around the representation of genocide in
international graphic novels that focus on the Holocaust
and the genocides in Armenia, Rwanda, and Bosnia. In
response to the predominantly negative readings of kitsch
as meaningless or inappropriate, this book offers a fresh
approach that considers how some of the kitsch strategies
employed in these works facilitate an affective interaction
with the genocide narrative. These productive strategies
include the use of the visual metaphors of the animal and
the doll figure and the explicit and excessive depictions
of mass violence. The book also analyses where kitsch still
produces problems as it critically examines depictions of
perpetrators and the visual and verbal representations of
sexual violence. Furthermore, it explores how graphic
novels employ anti-kitsch strategies to avoid the dangers
of excess in dealing with genocide. The Re presentation of
Genocide in Graphic Novels will appeal to those working in
comics-graphic novel studies, popular culture studies, and
Holocaust and genocide studies. -- Call no.: PN6714 .I55

discusses developments and continuities in experimental
animation that, since Robert Russet and Cecile Starr's
'Experimental Animation: Origins of a New Art' (1976), has
proliferated in the context of expanded cinema, performance
and live 'making' and is today exhibited in galleries,
public sites and online. With reference to historical,
   critical, phenomenological and inter-disciplinary
approaches, international researchers offer new and diverse
methodologies for thinking through these myriad animation
practices. This volume addresses fundamental questions of
form, such as drawing and the line, but also broadens out
to encompass topics such as the inter-medial,
post-humanism, the real, fakeness and fabrication,
causation, new forms of synthetic space, ecology, critical

Nobody's Fool : the Life and Times of Schlitzie the Pinhead /
   Bill Griffith. -- New York : Abrams ComicArts, 2019. -- 248
   p. : ill. ; 25 cm. -- Includes bibliographical references.
-- Summary (from publisher via OCLC): "The story of
Schlitzie's long career, from Coney Island and the Ringling
Bros. Circus to small town carnivals and big city
sideshows, is one of legend. Today, Schlitzie is most
well-known for his appearance in the cult classic Freaks
(produced by MGM of all studios in 1932 and directed by Tod
Browning, his first feature after the horror classic
Dracula), in which all of the sideshow performers were
real, not actors. The making of Freaks and Schlitzie's role
in the film is a centerpiece of the book. Freaks was also
the inspiration for Zippy the Pinhead, now in its 31st year
of newspaper syndication via King Features, and led to
Griffith's 50-year cartooning career. In researching
Schlitzie's life (1901-1971), Griffith has tracked down
primary sources and archives throughout the country,
including conducting interviews with those who worked with
him and had intimate knowledge of his personality, his
likes and dislikes, how he responded to being a sideshow
"freak," and much more. This graphic novel biography is not
exploitative, but instead humanizes Schlitzie by providing
never-before revealed details of his life, offering a
unique look into his world and restoring some dignity to
his life and recognizing his contributions to popular
culture." -- Biographical genre. -- Call no.:
