L'Homme de la Nouvelle Orleans

L'Homme de la Nouvelle Orleans / scénario, Charlier ; Gir ; dessins, Rossi. -- Belgium : Casterman, 1991 -- (Une Aventure de Jim Cutlass ; 2) -- 62 p. : col. ill. ; 30 cm. -- Western genre. -- Call no.: PN6747.R65H6 1991

Summary: Cyprus Lodge, Carolyn Grayson's plantation near New Orleans, has had a good cotton crop and Grayson will be able to pay off her debts when it is sold in three days. Playcard and Clay (though Clay's name is not at first revealed) talk about preventing the sale. Jim Cutlass, meanwhile, is stationed with the Army at Fort Jackson in New Orleans and is in charge of investigating the Invisible Empire, the Ku-Klux Klan. The Klan is active and terrorizing the Black population at this time just after the end of the Civil War, but Cutlass has no good information about who they are. On the night before Grayson's cotton is to go to market, a band of hooded men burns her shed and the crop is lost. Carolyn shoots one of the riders, and another one calls him "Gary." The Klansmen have dragged one of Cyprus Lodge's men, Jérémie, by the neck and Jérémie dies. Carolyn goes to the Army for help, and Jim Cutlass is assigned to the case. Jim considers himself half owner of Cyprus Lodge, but his cousin Carolyn denies it based on a document Jim signed under duress before the war. Cutlass and a troop of soldiers ride out to the plantation and with the help of the men there start looking for clues. They find the body of the wounded night rider Gary, hastily buried and stripped of identification by his fellow Klansmen. Nearby they find Gary's pocket watch, with a photograph inscribed to Gary by a woman named Kerry. From the way Kerry is dressed in the photo, Cutlass assumes that she must work in a bar, so he returns to his commanding officer to ask for money to search the bars of New Orleans for Kerry, in plainclothes. There are 227 bars, and after several days he has asked in 180 or so of them without any luck, when his commanding officer gets impatient and sets a deadline of one more night. That night Cutlass decides to interview photographers. The third one recognizes Kerry Lane, and his current model says she's working at the King Creole. Indeed, Cutlass visits the establishment and sees Kerry Lane on stage. He also meets his old friend or enemy Lulu Belle, who seems to be running the place. Cutlass tells Lane that Gary is dead, and she arranges to meet him after she gets off work. Lulu Belle sends her bouncers to evict Jim, and Jim knocks them both out. Later Jim climbs a rope that Kerry Lane throws down from her second story hotel room, and he tells her what he knows about Gary. She says he was trying to raise a lot of money fast by working for Playcard. Watchmen outside Lane's room hear them talking. The men, who are there to prevent her from talking to anyone, break into her room as Cutlass leaves via the window and rope. Cutlass breaks through a first floor window, then goes back upstairs to confront the three men. He shoots them all, but in the process one of them pushes Kerry out the window and she falls to her death. More men come in shooting, and Cutlass exits via the window, the rope, and the first floor bedroom again. He falls to the street outside and is momentarily stunned. Three men seem about to shoot Cutlass when the marshal and three other men intervene. The first group of men accuses Cutlass of killing Kerry Lane, and starts to encourage a lynch mob from among the gathering crowd. The marshal barely manages to get Cutlass back to his office alive. Don Clay assigns a man named Phil the task of making sure the lynch mob is successful. Meanwhile Carolyn Grayson is driving by in her buggy (it must be 4 in the morning by now), sees the situation, and hurries away. The marshal and his men defend their prisoner with gunfire, but the mob sets fire to the office and they have to escape through a cellar that communicates with other buildings. Meanwhile Carolyn loses a wheel from her buggy and crashes through the window of a saloon where three Black men are playing cards. Half the town seems to be on fire by now. Phil the provocateur figures out the marshal's escape route and is waiting for Cutlass and the lawmen when they emerge onto the street. Soon Cutlass is strung up on what looks like a telephone pole (it has insulators but no wires) when Carolyn Grayson shows up with the three Black card players and rescues him. A building collapses in flames and distracts everybody, smoke is suddenly everywhere, and a battle of fists and guns breaks out among the three groups in standoff. Most of the lynch party is dead, but Phil and Jim have gotten away, and Carolyn is wounded. Carolyn has told the Black men with her that Jim is her fiancé. Phil goes to the King Creole to report his failure to Playcard, Lulu Belle and Don Clay. Phil has been shot and dies on Lulu Belle's nice carpet, but not before Jim Cutlass, who has climbed to their balcony from outside, overhears the four of them talking and understands the whole thing. Phil says it was the Army that saved Cutlass, and Clay gives orders that Carolyn is not to be touched and that the Klan should cease all operations for the time being. Playcard and Lulu Belle are fighting as Cutlass walks quietly away at dawn, thinking that he doesn't yet have evidence to put them behind bars, but that his time will come.

"L'Homme des Montagnes Bleues" (Giddap Joe) p. 99-130 in
Cap'tain Swing, no. 114 (Sept. 2003). -- Summary: The story
opens at "Terre Brulée," the ranch of Giddap Joe. An Indian
boy named Wa Wa is hauling water for the horses when he
comes upon White Deer, a girl who brings a warning. The
white man in the blue mountains must leave, she says, or he
will be killed. There are only 15 days until winter snow is
expected. Joe takes the warning seriously, and rides up
into the mountains to look for the man. The man turns out
to be Bruce Altman, an old friend. It starts to snow early,
and the two are stuck in Altman's cabin for the winter.
Altman's story is that he was out hunting with his young
son Tom, six years earlier, when Tom saw an Indian,
panicked, and killed her. She was out picking berries.
Bruce told Tom never to admit he did it, and Bruce took the
blame for the crime himself. The incident led to the
killing of two other white families by the Indians. The
people of the town, Lone Pine, were about to lynch Bruce as
the cause of the Indian attacks, so he went into hiding.
Unbeknownst to Bruce, Tom has stood up in church and told
the truth within the past year, to clear his father's name.
The brother of the dead girl is still hunting Bruce, but
Giddap intercedes and explains the situation to the
brother. Bruce goes home. -- Call no.: PN6748.C336no.114
