The Fatal Deception

The Fatal Deception / by A.L. Giussani ; translation, Fred Blomgren ; lettering, Renato Benedetti. -- Long Beach, Calif.: Pacific Comics Club, 1986. -- (Diabolik ; 2) -- 122 p. : ill. ; 18 cm. -- Call no.: PN6768.D513no.2

Summary: The Sandor Sapphire has been stolen, and the fence Paul Maser has taken a lot of money out of the bank. The police assume that he is getting ready to buy the stone, when an anonymous tip tells them that he already has it. The police raid Maser's house, and learn that the deal is set for the next day, so they set a trap. Diabolik figures this out and warns the thieves, using a disguise. They believe him, and one of their number comes up with another plan: sell the sapphire for one-fifth its value to the insurance company. The company goes for it, but in the exchange they lose their money and the gem. In the process their agent also appears to have been killed. Actually, Hilda, one of the gang members, had set the plan up with the insurance company's agent, and the body that is found is that of a gang member she betrayed. Diabolik still wants the sapphire, and decides to find Hilda. He knows a little about her, and after a few months he and Eva spot her in a casino. Just as Diabolik and Eva are closing in, however, the rest of the betrayed gang finds Hilda as well. Diabolik kills two gang members and Hilda, and Eva puts on Hilda's clothes to go search the house. The surviving gang member calls the police, and Inspector Ginko shows up for a car chase. Diabolik and Eva get away, disappointed not to have the sapphire, but then they realize that they do have it. Hilda had it mounted on her purse.

Wheatley-End, under the two oldest trees, known as the
"Devil's Horns," a wizard named Adam Niels has built a hut.
Adam has figured out how to make any sphere self-destruct
by sticking a pin in a certain point on it, and has further
determined that his hut is on the Earth's destruct point.
Whenever he tries his procedure, spheres for miles around
break in sympathy, and the villagers are sick of losing
lamps. The villagers go to the hut intent on destroying it,
and Adam worries what might happen. Just then a gigantic
pin from outer space pokes a hole through the hut into the

Pharas enters and makes Rork take off his dark cowl, and
other clothing, to reveal that the clothes are empty and
that Rork really isn't there. Pharas takes the assembled
company into a spherical ship, apparently manned by people
from the undersea civilization, and they journey to where
Rork can be seen in suspended animation, caught between
worlds. Deliah tries to free him with her powers, which
Pharas thinks will ruin everything, when suddenly Adam
Niels hits the spherical ship with an arrow to its fatal
point, and blows it up. Adam has figured out that it was
this ship that earlier destroyed his laboratory. Adam
reveals that it was he who hired Raffington Stevens. In the
confusion, Rork and Deliah have teleported together, but
Pharas says they probably didn't arrive anywhere together.

Summary: A young businessman and political hopeful named Silvio has gotten involved with loan sharks. When he mentions going to the police his wife, Valeria, is raped in front of him as a warning. The next day they rape her again in a beauty parlor. Silvio comes up with part of the money, but the financial group promises to rape Valeria at 6 p.m. every day until he makes full payment. A large man named Ursus performs the task faithfully for weeks. Valeria escapes to Barbados to the safety of a yacht owned by a congressman, who is Silvio's political mentor. The congressman had seemed to be a friend, but it turns out he had orchestrated Silvio's financial ruin because he wanted Valeria for himself. Ursus himself reveals the plot to Valeria, with whom he has fallen in love.
