The Extended Dream of Mr. D.

The Extended Dream of Mr. D. / written and drawn by Max ; translated by David Griffiths ; lettering by Dirk Rehm. -- Montreal, Que. : Drawn and Quarterly, 2000. -- 74 p. : ill. ; 26 cm. -- Call no.: PN6777.M3E917 2000

Summary: Christopher D. is dissatisfied with his life, and falls asleep for forty days. In his dream he meets three different characters, who share their own dreams with him. Christopher meets Su on a train, and hears his story.

"Su's Dream" (p. 9-16): Su is an Asian man intellectually and spiritually inclined. Su was living on a mountain-top with a tiger, learning contemplation. A traveler named Scallywax came along with a story. Su realized that he wasn't as content as he thought, and that stories were what he was missing.

The train with Christopher and Su on it comes into a deserted station near a cemetery. They find Scallywax in a coffin, incompletely dead, and Scallywax tells Christopher to go console his grieving daughter, Sarah. Christopher falls in love with Sarah, plucks the heart out of his chest and gives it to her. Back on the train Christopher has a dream involving versions of Sarah, and wakes up to find Sarah in the compartment with Su and himself.

"Sarah's Dream" (p. 33-40): Sarah was married to a Lebanese millionaire in the mafia. She told him she was unhappy, and he got angry and threw her overboard from his yacht. The yacht blew up and she drifted to shore to be found by an Anchorite, who got drunk and tried to rape her. Scallywax came by and shot him.

Christopher D. then dreams a train wreck, a wild ride on a horse, catching Mighty Mouse, and an ejaculation that leaves him empty. Scallywax stabs Christopher with a knife and offers him a drink from either of two fountains before he dies. One water is of forgetfulness, and the other is of memory. Instead Christopher gets angry and tries to kill Scallywax, and Scallywax applauds.

"Scallywax's Dream" (p. 57-64): Scallywax was in a prison cell for thirty-five years, when a rain came that dissolved the cell. He set out to find the person who had imprisoned him, and enlisted the help of Su and Sarah. He accuses Christopher of being the one who built the prison, and challenges Christopher to remember and help sort it out.

Christopher remembers fighting back against a bully when he was five years old. A priest at that time told him he was evil for doing so, and Christopher repressed Scallywax, a dark part of himself. Next Sarah introduces herself as his rejected feminine side, and Su as his wisdom. All four characters embrace and jump into the ocean together, and Christopher wakes up.

Exterminator 17 / Enki Bilal, Jean-Pierre Dionnet. -- New York : Catalan Communications, 1986. -- 62 p. : col. ill. ; 28 cm. -- "Translation and lettering courtesy of Heavy Metal magazine." -- Serialized in English in Heavy Metal v. 2, no. 6-11 (October 1978 to March 1979). -- Translation of: Exterminateur 17. -- Call no.: PN6747.B5E913 1986
Summary: A force of battle androids is observed in action by the old man who first created successful androids. He sees a model 17, which was the first viable one, made from his own body cells. Peace is declared, so the androids are killed to avoid political complications. The old man is dying, and regrets the destructive power he has unleashed. He dies and is resurrected on the battlefield in the body of Exterminator 17. The humans see an android come back to life and realize this might cause a rebellion, so they hire Neo-Puritans to kill 17. Meanwhile 17 has taken up the cause of freeing all the androids. The Neo-Puritans learn about 17's supernatural resurrection and let him go, and he destroys the human military establishment. The androids are released, and fly off to the stars on rockets.
