----------------------------------------------------- Brusasca, Gianni--Miscellanea. Entry (v. 3, p. 777) in Dictionnaire Encyclopédique de Héros et Auteurs de BD, by Henri Filippini (Grenoble : Glénat, 2000). -- Call no.: PN6707.F5 1998 v.3 -----------------------------------------------------
BrüselBrüsel / François Schuiten and Benoît Peeters. -- New York : Nantier Beall Minoustchine, 2001. -- 119 p. : col. ill. ; 31 cm. -- (Cities of the Fantastic) -- In French the series title is Les Cités Obscures. Science fiction based to some degree on a real plan to reconstruct Brussels. -- Call no.: PN6747.S35B713 20011. "Fantastic Plastic" p. 13-29. -- Summary: Constant Abeels is a florist who has invented plastic plants, as a contribution to the progress of society. He is visited by Professor Ernest Dersenval, an inventor himself. Dersenval is planning a grand new health care facility and sees the plastic plants as an important step in the fight against disease. As the professor is leaving the water stops working in Constant's building, and as Constant is trying to report it the telephone fails as well. After a long streetcar ride and visits to several offices, Constant comes to one where something might be done about his utilities. All the accounts are being transferred into a new automatic brain, and luckily they've just finished the letter "A." At the moment Mr. Abeels is learning this, the brain destructs in a cloud of smoke because Tina Tonero, the new employee, has surreptitiously poured coffee into it. She takes Constant into the chamber where the old paper files are scattered and mounded, where books and ledgers are tumbling from shelves and sinking into water from leaky plumbing, and begins to seduce him. Then she sends him to the Catholic hospital nearby because he is coughing blood. 2. "All Problems Go with Freddy DeVrouw" p. 31-47. -- Summary: Constant Abeels is admitted to the hospital, and though he has second thoughts when he sees the conditions he is soon hustled into a bed with two other sufferers. Before long his back is covered with leeches per doctor's orders. After more than a week he hears the voice of Professor Dersenval, who is giving a tour of the city's wretched health care conditions to Freddy DeVrouw. DeVrouw is the financier who is planning to rebuild the city of Brüsel. Abeels gets Dersenval's attention, and Dersenval gets him released. On the way to a meeting in the palace of government they come upon Tina Tonero, who is being fired from her job for being a saboteur and not wearing underwear. At the meeting DeVrouw shows off a scale model of the Brüsel he intends to build. All of the old buildings, even apparently the good ones, will be destroyed. Abeels isn't feeling well, and the professor sends him home. 3. "Electricity is Felicity" p. 49-65. -- Summary: Constant Abeels returns home to find his neighborhood almost demolished and his own building slated for the same. He also finds a letter from Tina, who asks him to visit at her new job. Tina is in charge of a machine that controls railroad traffic, and she seems to enjoy causing random train wrecks. Abeels then visits Dersenval, who insists on giving him a kind of magnetic electro-shock therapy for his cough. The treatment is very unpleasant and doesn't help. That night Abeels puts on a gas mask and goes out posting anti-DeVrouw placards with Tina and her friends. He gets separated from them when the police chase them, and ends up falling into the river. 4. "Off the Hospital with Good 'Ole Dersenval!" p. 67-83. -- Summary: Constant Abeels is very sick and he calls Professor Dersenval for help. Freddy DeVrouw himself picks him up in his dirigible and takes him to the Professor's new clinic, now almost completely built, where Constant is to be the first patient. Dersenval is excited about it while ignoring his friend's distress. Meanwhile Tina has a new job as a telephone switchboard operator, and a lawsuit is going forward to prevent the demolition of Abeels' building. Rumors come to the administrators of the city about embezzlement and crooked dealing on some of DeVrouw's other jobs. The telephones in the palace of government all go dead, and it seems Tina has destroyed her work station and left her job. 5. "Says Doctor Vincent: I'm Quite Content!" p. 85-101. -- Summary: Constant Abeels wakes up in the new clinic, and soon two doctors are fighting over what should be his appropriate treatment. This gives Constant the opportunity to slip away. He comes upon an operating theater, where a surgeon, Dr. Polydore Vincent, is operating, removing a patient's unnecessary organs with much self-congratulation and an audience of society people. Constant comes across other patients undergoing strange treatments, and finally runs into Professor Dersenval. Dersenval seems to be losing his mind, and is looking in a befuddled way for patients. Meanwhile Tina Tonero has dressed up as a nurse and is searching the building for Constant. They run into each other in the laundry room, and make love in a pile of clean sheets. 6. "For Death to be Beat, One Last Feat" p. 103-120 --
Summary: The city is in bad shape financially
and physically. The projects are stopped and dikes have broken.
There is flooding everywhere. Tina and Constant climb higher in
the hospital to get out of the water and come upon a locked
ward of incurables, and then come upon Dersenval. An inverted
circuit in one of his machines has apparently removed his mind.
Fleeing from the flood, they make their way to Constant Abeels'
shop, near which Freddy DeVrouw's dirigible has crashed.
Salvaging part of the airship's gondola, they find DeVrouw
himself hiding from activists. They are able to make a
motorized raft and leave the ruined city. Constant finally
stops coughing. Bibliography:

Flying over the sea he appreciates the beauty, then finds ocean creatures dying from a toxic spill from a World War II freighter. He picks up the ship thinking that though he vowed not to interfere in conflicts between nations he can't leave this alone (note the conflict has been over for 40 years!). 'With everything else that needs to be done in the world, why should I have to protect Earth from its own inhabitants?' He is conflicted about not having enough time either as Superman or as Clark Kent. He'd like to do small acts of kindness like blowing down acorns for hungry squirrels. He thinks Lana should have more time with him as Clark. Getting back in time to anchor the news, an admiring technician gives him perspective, and he feels better about his lives. -- Call no.: PN6728.1.N3S8no.409 ----------------------------------------------------- Brush Fires.
