Ballad for a Coffin

Ballad for a Coffin / Jean-Michel Charlier, Jean "Moebius" Giraud, co-creators. -- New York : Epic Comics, 1989. -- 62 p. : col. ill. ; 28 cm. -- (Blueberry ; 2) -- (Epic Graphic Novel) -- Originally published in 1974 as: Ballade pour un Cercueil. -- Second in the "Confederate Gold" series. -- Genre: Western. -- Call no.: PN6747.C44B2813 1989

Summary: In the ghost town of Tacoma, just as the outlaws finish digging up the grave Trevor has indicated, Trevor makes a break for it. Finlay shoots Trevor's horse and Trevor's arm is broken in the fall, but he makes it to where he has hidden a rifle and holds the outlaws off from a balcony. A squatter named Lazarito kills him for his horse, boots and guns, and rides away. Lopez and his men find the hideout, and while they are searching for Blueberry, Pearl, and co., these latter sneak out and steal Lopez's horses and ride towards Tacoma. On the way they meet the peon who killed Trevor, and Pearl recognizes her husband's boots. Pearl kills him and finds a message Trevor left in one of his boots: the name on the grave to which he has moved the gold. Mike gives Trevor a decent burial, with words about honor, and slaps Pearl to the ground when she speaks disrespectfully. The Yankees find the second coffin in the church as indicated by the note in the boot, but it's very heavy so they leave Pearl behind and ride to get a wagon. Finlay has been watching and moves in to question Pearl, and she stands them off from the locked bell tower. Meanwhile Lopez and his men find their horses and the dead peon, and decide to head for Tacoma. Watching outside Chihuahua, Blueberry and friends finally see a suitable wagon owned by a patent medicine dealer who is being run out of town. They save him from a lynching and promise him $1,000 for his wagon. Back at Tacoma, Lopez and his men arrive and run the Confederates off, then start trying to get at Pearl themselves. She makes a deal with them that if they hide in ambush she'll deliver Blueberry into their hands. Blueberry arrives in the quack's wagon and manages to get through the ambush before the soldiers recognize him. The coffin is loaded into the wagon and the bottles and kegs of snake oil are converted into fire bombs and smoke bombs. Next morning Lopez has brought a cannon, and fires it at the church. Blueberry sets off the various bombs and escapes in the wagon. What remains of Lopez's forces, including the men chasing Kimball and Finlay, begins racing to catch the wagon before it crosses the border. At the Herrera Depot Blueberry switches the coffin to a stagecoach with fresh horses and takes off with the empty wagon to mislead the soldiers. After blowing up the wagon and further diminishing Lopez's forces, Blueberry leads them to the stagecoach which is just crossing a bridge. As planned, the bridge gives way and Lopez with several other men and horses are lowered violently into the Rio Conchos. At the next stagecoach depot, Vigo and his men are waiting in ambush. Pearl surprises Vigo and they are able to grab Vigo as a hostage and load the stagecoach on a ferry. Finlay and Kimball are waiting on the other side, so they cut the rope and let the ferry drift downstream. The Rio Conchos empties into the Rio Grande, so if they make it they've reached the border. It's a tough trip. The body of Lopez floats by. The current is high, but they make it to Texas. They sink the ferry and Blueberry heads for Salinas to contact General McPherson. Finlay and Kimball catch him and make him change clothes with Kimball. Then Donnogan the bounty hunter takes Blueberry from them. Blueberry overpowers Donnogan and asks him to cable McPherson. Meanwhile Kimball, using Mike's clothes as a disguise, finds the stagecoach. As they labor to open the coffin, Vigo laughs. Vigo has known all along there was no gold, only scrap metal. The gold has been used to finance Juarez's revolution against the Emperor Maximilian, according to Vigo. Vigo's mission has been to keep people from finding out the gold was gone, because "Washington" thinks the gold belongs to the U.S. government. The Mexican government is afraid the U.S. will use the missing gold as a pretext to grab more Mexican territory. Vigo tells McPherson that Blueberry pocketed the gold, and Blueberry goes to prison for 30 years. Pearl starts a dance hall in Salinas. Kimball and Finlay kill each other.

Ballala.
"Raja Bhoja : a Patron of the Arts and Literature" /
   script, Kamala Chandrakant ; illustrations, G.R. Naik ;
editor, Anant Pai. p. 1-32 in Amar Chitra Katha, no. 596
   (1976, 2010 printing). -- (Bravehearts) -- Begins: "Raja
Bhoja was the son of King Sindhula of Dhara, in Madhya
Pradesh. He was born when Sindhula was very old." --
Summary from back cover: "Amidst the many wars he fought,
Raja Bhoja (11th century A.D.), the ruler of Malwa, always
found time to listen to the poetry of the gifted. Ballala,
a poet in his court, has immortalised his patron in his
work Bhoja Prabandha which is a romantic tale, written in
Sanskrit, partly in verse and partly in prose. Ballala was
interested not so much in history as in heroics. In his
attempt to magnify Bhoja as a patron of the arts and
letters, Ballala has ignored historical facts. The poets,
Kalidasa and Bana, who he said adorned Bhoja's court,
actually lived much before Bhoja's times." -- Call no.:

hard. But something is different about Kurara-she is acting

Summary (from OCLC): His name is Deucalion, a tattooed man
   of mysterious origin, a sleight-of-reality artist who's
traveled the centuries with a secret worse than death. He
arrives as a serial killer stalks the streets, a killer who
carefully selects his victims for the humanity that is
missing in himself. Detective Carson O'Connor is cool,
cynical, and every bit as tough as she looks. Her partner
Michael Maddison would back her up all the way to Hell
itself, and that just may be where this case ends up. For
the no-nonsense O'Connor is suddenly talking about an
ages-old conspiracy, a near immortal race of beings, and
killers that are more, and less, than human. Soon it will
be clear that as crazy as she sounds, the truth is even
more ominous. For their quarry isn't merely a homicidal
maniac, but his deranged maker. -- Horror genre. -- Call

transformed into magically powerful feathers. There,
Syaoran meets his "Kudan": a fierce wolf-spirit whose fiery
power mirrors Syaoran's personal strength. But with foes
like a pop idol who sings words of pain, Syaoran's hunt for
feathers is no child's game! Even if he finds the feathers,
