story about Frederic
Remington, with his paintings interspersed. -- Western
genre. -- Call no.: PN6747.M64L871 2001
Summary: The year is 1888. Lucky Luke has been
sent by Governor Waterfalls to protect Frederic Remington as he
paints in the West. Luke finds Remington painting an Indian
named Blue Cloud, and Blue Cloud complains that after posing
motionless for three hours he is too stiff to move. Blue
Cloud's horse has the same complaint. Remington is a big man,
good with his fists, and hardly seems to need protection. An
imcompetent outlaw named Curly makes several attempts on
Remington's life, which Remington barely notices. His artistic
goal this trip is to paint a portrait of Hiawatha. On the way
they are surrounded and captured by Eagle-Foot Indians
disguised as cactuses. Lucky Luke negotiates their release by
offering some of Remington's paints, since the tribe has run
out of war paint. He also asks the chief why he speaks without
articles and with all the verbs in the infinitive, and the
chief says the tourists expect it. Remington throws in a paint
job for the tribe's teepees. He whistles while he paints, which
annoys Jolly Jumper. Next they go to Hound Dog City, which is a
hangout for outlaws. Both Frederic Remington and Lucky Luke
enjoy barroom brawls, and they get plenty of them in Hound Dog
City. When they find Hiawatha, he won't pose for a painting
until Remington has won an eating contest. Curly shows up again
and Hiawatha's wife spanks him with a rolling pin. SHe won't
let Hiawatha pose with a peace pipe because they cause lung
cancer, so they try a rain-dancing painting. It rains. Next a
sundance gives Hiawatha a heat stroke, but finally the painting
is finished. A bank robber steals Remington's money, and heads
toward Crazytown. Lucky Luke gives chase, and brings the robber
named Crazy Dan, to justice. A telegram comes for Lucky Luke,
saying the Daltons have escaped again, and Remington paints him
riding off into the suntset. A photograph and biographical
sketch of Remington at the end historicize the story,
somewhat.
