The Goddess

The Goddess / Jean Giraud. -- New York: Epic Comics, 1990. Jean. -- 88 p. : col. ill. ; 28 cm. -- (Moebius : the Collected Fantasies of Jean Giraud ; 7) -- The story "The Goddess" is part of what is sometimes called "The Aedena Cycle." -- A reprinting of this edition forms the first third of a limited edition also called Moebius 7, published by Graphitti Designs in 1990. -- Contents: "The Goddess" 80 p. ; "Black Thursday" 2 p. -- Call no.: PN6747.G5A4 1987 v.7. -- Call no.: PN6747.G5A4 1987b v.7

"The Goddess" 80 p. -- Summary: Atana is searching the forest for signs of habitation. She sees an explosion and upon investigating is captured by Nesters. The Nesters always wear bodysuits and masks called 'faces.' They take Atana to their underground city and put a mask and suit on her. Atana tries to escape, but is caught and interrogated. During the questioning the Paternum, ruler of the Nest, calls and orders her killed immediately. She is shot through the heart. A small group of revolutionaries steals her body and revives her, believing her to be a goddess. With them she flees into the sewers to join a society of outcasts called Roachers. A blind child takes her into his dream, where he has been watching her since she arrived on the planet. She names him Lazlo. The Nesters organize a search and find Atana's body, and she stands up and glows, though her mind is still participating in Lazlo's dream. She cures a case of Nose Fever among the Nesters, while Lazlo struggles against the Paternum in the dream. The Nose Fever cure is seen as a miracle and inspires a Nester rebellion to free Atana. The Paternum is killed or badly injured, and the Nesters are free.

"Black Thursday" 2 p. Summary: Errand boy Jerman Clozer resolves to try to stop the cruel game of the gods. First appeared in English in Heavy Metal, no. 9 (Dec. 1977). This story also appears in Is Man Good (Heavy Metal Communications, 1978).
