Allaïve : un Môme de Perdu

Allaïve : un Môme de Perdu... / Olivier Taffin. -- Paris : Dargaud Éditeur, 1986. -- 48 p. : col. ill. ; 30 cm. -- Call no.: PN6747.T25A4 1986
Summary: The setting is the South Pacific, among mainly European inhabitants. Laure Swan has let her son Tom go off with a Spaniard, and after three years or so they haven't come back. Then the Spaniard's boat is found, badly damaged and with two bodies aboard. Neither body is that of the boy, however. One is the Spaniard, and the other is a Jewish Nazi-hunter. Also in the boat the authorities find a stone symbol of a creature called Allaïve. Allaïve is supposedly something part human and part animal, and reanimated from death. A strange bald man laughs at them when they say that Allaïve is a legend. The legend, though, comes from an island called Santa Flora, and so Laure has a clue about where to look for Tom. The bald man is given to mystical-sounding utterances that make it sound like he knows something about Tom, so when he heads for his own boat, Laure follows him. On the boat Laure finds a former Buchenwald scientist/torturer named Ulrich Fleischmann, who says he has her son. As they set sail for Santa Flora, Fleischmann tells of his experiments in the concentration camp, and how he believes and dreams of a different kind of life that can persist and be immortal, like cancer cells, without being required to follow its assigned genetic code. Back at the first island, Laure's policeman friend Dario Kende starts to figure out some of what's going on. First they find notes on the body of the Nazi-hunter. Then Pauline Couleur, a woman who was born on Santa Flora but escaped, describes Fleischmann's work and says the island has ten times the normal incidence of cancer. Finally they find an old newspaper article about Fleischmann, announcing his successful separation of Siamese twins. The news photo shows them that the mysterious mystic that Laure left with is one of the twins. Fearing for Laure's safety, they head for Santa Flora. Meanwhile Laure has found Tom in Fleischmann's laboratory, essentially dead but host to a large tumor that Fleischmann is growing. Fleischmann has a machine that collects Laure's grief, with which he plans to animate the tumor as an independent creature. Laure steals her son from the laboratory and smashes the tumor.
