Les Angoisses de Cellulite

Les Angoisses de Cellulite / Claire Bretécher. -- Neuilly-sur-Seine : Dargaud, 1981. -- 64 p. : col. ill. ; 32 cm. -- Contents: "L'Artisan du Bonheur" p. 4-35 ; "Peau de Bique" p. 37-42 ; "L'Élu" p. 44-51 ; "Bloustorie" p. 53-64. -- Call no.: PN6747.B7A5 1981

"L'Artisan du Bonheur" p. 4-35 -- Summary: It's the Middle Ages. Teenage princess Cellulite is the only child of a single father, who is the local king. The small business owners and artisans are tired of the king's taxes, so they blow up the treasury. The king sends his army to round them up, but the civilians refuse to be treated that way, and instead send a delegate to negotiate. The delegate's name is Cid Unati, usually called "Le Cid." The king throws him in the dungeon. Cellulite asks her minstrel for information about "Le Cid," and after hearing part of a ballad she puts on a Spanish costume, does a Flamenco dance, and sneaks him out of the dungeon to her bedroom. The king finds him there, and they make a deal. Le Cid says he's an alchemist who has nearly perfected a process for transmuting toilet paper into dollars. In exchange for lower taxes, he will set up his research in the castle and give the dollars to the king. The king says that when the research is finished Le Cid shall have Cellulite as his bride, which displeases Le Cid mightly but pleases Cellulite enormously. The research goes badly, but under pressure from the king Le Cid produces a bicycle he has invented, though he doesn't know what it's good for. The king throws it out the window. The bicycle is passed from hand to hand until it becomes the object of an investigation by the secret police of a neighboring kingdom. In rapid succession, Le Cid then invents a coffee grinder, a camera, a cuckoo clock, and diverse other objects that all go out the window and across the border. The other kingdom finally decides these items might give them an economic advantage, though still not knowing what any of them are for. Meanwhile the artisans and businesspeople hear Cellulite bragging about her wedding plans, and figure Le Cid must have sold them out. The king loses patience and decides to have Le Cid killed, but Cellulite pleads for his life and he is released from the castle into a melée of foreign soldiers trying to kidnap him and protesters calling him a class traitor. Cellulite has found a use for a bicycle in spinning thread, and calls it her sewing machine. Actually she has purchased all of the defenestrated inventions back at high prices. When she sees Le Cid escaping the mobs on a horse, she mounts the final invention, a treadle-operated sewing machine sold to her as a bicycle. She catches him, he says he doesn't want to get married, and she pulls a hair out of his nose as a souvenir.

"Peau de Bique" p. 37-42 -- Summary: Once upon a time a king had a prize nannygoat, which was his pride and joy, and a wife. The wife was a heavy smoker and died of lung cancer, making him promise not to remarry unless to a woman even stupider than herself. Time has passed, and now the king's advisors say he must remarry. The only woman he can find that would be suitable is is own daughter, so he announces to her that they are to be married. Her astrologer says this isn't a good idea, and that she should make some impossible demands to prevent it. The king is good at meeting impossible demands, and the final demand is for the skin of his beloved goat, which he gives her. She asks the adviser again what to do, and she says to put the skin on her back and run away. The princess gets a job in a factory and is know as "Peau de Bique" (Nanny-Hide). She catches the eye of the boss's son, who is yearning for less intelligent girlfriends and a stupider life, and they marry. The king marries the astrologer. Cellulite plays both the title role and the role of the dying queen at the beginning.

"L'Élu" p. 44-51 -- Summary: A pollster comes to the kingdom and asks to interview Cellulite, but when he learns that her father is the king he changes his plan. Soon the king and pollster have struck a deal to hold an election. It's a business deal, and the pollster gets 20 percent of the proceeds from sales of campaign supplies and gambling, etc. Some of the populace suspect that this is just another scheme to find a husband for Cellulite. Posters and signs are made, and a public debate begins. Meanwhile Cellulite is jealous that her father is monopolizing all the good-looking pollster's time. When she finds out that her father's mistress is also interested in the pollster, she snaps. Climbing onto the platform where the debate is happening, she denounces the proceedings and also says that the winner gets her hand in marriage. That's the last straw for the reluctant politicians, who were having trouble reading their scripts anyway. Cellulite then tells her father that she's going to marry the pollster, who's waiting in her bedroom. It turns out he's not there, he's in the king's bed with the mistress. The pollster and the mistress run away together, and Cellulite is left talking to the magic mirror on her wall.

"Bloustorie" p. 53-64 -- Summary: King Renaud's mother says it's time to get married, and suggests he marry Cellulite, heiress of a neighboring kingdom. Renaud is only attracted to little girls and is very much against getting married. Finally he says he'll marry a woman whose skin is so sensitive that a pea under seven mattresses will leave a mark on her skin. They send their gardener to the castle of Cellulite with a pea, and with instructions to wait all night and see what happens. The next morning the gardener, who was waiting under the mattresses with the pea, is found smothered to death in the bed. Renaud himself then places the pea, and impersonates a maid in the morning to inspect her skin, which has no mark. The next night he puts a coffee grinder under the mattresses, but no mark appears. Then it's a chair, than a tractor, then a chapel, but Cellulite's sleep is not disturbed and her skin is not marred. Cellulite finally figures out what's going on, and regrets missing the opportunity. She puts on a prickly fur to mark her skin, but the next morning Renaud has given up and she wakes up thinking it was all a dream. She orders peas for breakfast.

Awards given at the event, including the Grand Prize of the City of Angoulême, the Alfreds and the Alph'arts, will be listed and linked to our library's holdings as appropriate. "The Replacement!" (Superman) / Cary Bates, writer ; Curt
Swan, penciller ; Dave Hunt, inker ; Agustin Mas, letterer
   ; Gene D'Angelo, colorist ; Julius Schwartz, editor. 24 p.
in Superman, no. 418 (Apr. 1986). -- SUMMARY: Aliens
Superman once met as Superboy ask for help in dealing with
a threat to their civilization. He agrees and one alien
stays to take over Superman's job. The news media name him
"Superman-X." Guns turn to dust, kryptonite turns to
sandstone, and people begin to think the replacement has
surpassed Superman. Superman-X cures hopeless diseases,
etc., but doesn't balance his deeds with self-restraint.
Lois and Jimmy show Superman-X a news story in which a
child with polio and leg braces is killed in the chaos of
people trying to get to the "savior" at the hospital gates.
Superman-X believes it and leaves in a wail of anguish, but
the tape was a fake, nobody has died, although the chaos
was real. The real Superman returns soon after (summary by
Mary Walker). -- Call no.: PN6728.1.N3S8no.418
