Corto Maltese in Siberia

Corto Maltese in Siberia / Hugo Pratt ; translation by Elisabeth Bell. -- New York : Nantier-Beall-Minoustchine, 1988. -- 125 p. : ill. ; 28 cm. -- (Corto Maltese ; 10) -- An eight page introduction at the beginning, written by Didier Platteau, includes a map, a sketch of the political situations in Russia and China in 1919, and character descriptions. -- Translated from the French version, Corto Maltese en Siberie. -- Adventure story genre. -- Call no.: PN6768.C6S513 1988

Chapter 1. "The Red Lanterns" 16 p. -- Summary: World War One has ended, and Corto Maltese is in Hong Kong, where he has set up a home. He meets Captain Rasputin, whom he last saw in the Caribbean when they were looking for treasure together (in the story "Banana Conga.") He learns that a Chinese secret society of women, the "Red Lanterns," is looking for him. Attempts are made on Corto's life and three Red Lanterns save him, then offer him a job. They are trying to obtain gold that is a tsarist treasure, now being carried around on a "gold train" by an Admiral Kolchak. Rasputin wants to be Corto's partner in the effort.

Chapter 2. "Prisoner of Chang" 12 p. -- Summary: Corto leaves for Shanghai on a junk arranged by Rasputin. The junk is owned by the Red Sunset, who want to kill Corto, but a warning comes just in time from a Red Lantern, who helps them fight the crew and set the junk on fire. Corto escapes and swims to shore and is taken to a warlord named General Chang. Chang figures out what the mission is, and lets Corto go, expecting Corto will lead him to the gold train.

Chapter 3. "The Romantic Duchess" 14 p. -- Summary: Corto reports to the Red Lanterns in Shanghai, and in a sauna meets an American pilot named Jack Tippet. Tippet tells him about the Russian Duchess Seminova, who is riding around Siberia in an armored train. Corto hitches an airplane ride with Tippet to his next destination in Manchuria, but they fly over Seminova's train and get shot down by her men. Tippet and Corto are taken aboard the train, and Corto asks to be let off at the Manchurian border. Seminova warns him about Baron Roman von Ungern-Sternberg, who is in charge of the border, and fancies himself a new Genghis Khan.

Chapter 4. "The Wildcat Division" 24 p. -- Summary: At the border, Seminova introduces Corto and Tippet to Commander Semenov of the Cossack "Wildcat Division." Semenov shows off a new train car with a giant cannon on it, and Corto remarks that it would be easy to derail or disable it. Making contact with the Red Lanterns, Corto joins with one of them, Shanghai Li, and a Russian officer named Nino, and they set out for the gold train. Corto loses his companions in the snow, but finds Rasputin. A few days later, Commander Semenov's armored train is about to intercept the gold train. Shanghai Li, Corto, Rasputin and Nino are aboard the train, and the gold car is now part of Duchess Seminova's train. Semenov fires on Seminova's train, stops it and gets the gold car. Rasputin kills the Duchess, and Semenov's train heads back for Semenov's fortress. The Red Lanterns divert the train, and Shanghai Li uncouples the gold car, but it goes too fast and falls into a lake.

Chapter 5. "Ungern of Mongolia" 15 p. -- Summary: Corto Maltese, Shanghai Li and Captain Rasputin are arrested by Baron von Ungern-Sternberg's cavalry. The trio interests the Baron, so he doesn't kill them right away. Also just arriving is the giant cannon of General Semenov, and the three sneak out of their confinement and destroy it. This amuses the Baron, who offers Corto a job, and when Corto turns him down he lets the three of them go.

Chapter 6. "The End of the Black Dragon" 18 p. -- Summary: Shanghai Li gets them to the headquarters of Sulkay Bator, a Mongol revolutionary. Warlord Chang's train is about to arrive, and Corto and Rasputin join the train, kill a gun crew, and fire one of the train's cannons at the others. Meanwhile Shanghai Li and the Mongols are firing at a bridge in front of the train. The train crashes, and the Red Lanterns and Mongols are free to recover the gold from the lake. Shanghai Li is sad thinking she's killed Corto and Rasputin along with Chang. Later Corto visits Shanghai Li and her husband on a farm where she's teaching a new class of apprentice Red Lanterns, and says goodbye.
