Summary: This album is not a comic, but rather a series of cels from the animated film with a children's-book style text. Caesar gets the idea of dealing with his Gaulish problem by having the druid Getafix kidnapped, taken to the edge of the world by boat, and dropped off. Getafix is duly snatched, along with Dogmatix. Asterix and Obelix, out fishing, see the Roman galley go by with its prisoners. To be mean, the Romans drop Dogmatix overboard for the sharks, but a dolphin saves him and takes him to Obelix in the pursuing boat. The galley reaches the new world, and the Romans shoot Getafix onto the land with a catapult, assuming that the edge of the world is near and that he will fall over. Asterix and Obelix beach their boat. The next morning Asterix is captured by Indians and joins Getafix, while Obelix goes looking for Dogmatix and rescues an Indian girl from buffalo on the prairie. Returning to the Indian camp, Obelix is in time to rescue his friends, and their status is improved because the girl is their chief's daughter. The medicine man, however, drugs the Gauls and tries to get the secret of the magic potion. Gauls are made of sterner stuff than that, and soon Obelix paddles them all the way back to Gaul in a canoe. When they return, their village is in ruins and the people captured. Asterix and Obelix sneak into the Roman camp and give gourds of potion to the prisoners. Though the village is in ruin, the usual closing banquet is held.

Summary: A new bunch of Romans arrives near the Armorican village of Asterix and Obelix. These Romans have just come from Belgium, and act happy to be beaten up in Gaul because it was so much worse in Belgium. The Belgians, Caesar is supposed to have said, are the bravest of all the Gaulish peoples. Chief Vitalstatistix is incensed at hearing this and decides to travel to Belgium and see for himself. Asterix and Obelix follow. In Belgium a contest develops involving comparative Roman-bashing, which the Belgians do without the benefit of magic potions, except beer. They escalate the competition to get the attention of Julius Caesar, so he can be the judge. Caesar arrives in Belgium, announced in a cameo by Thompson and Thomson (of the "Tintin" series). Caesar is not pleased to be cast in the role of judging the comparative destruction of his own armies. Caesar calls for a battle instead, and the Belgians agree, though asking the Armorican Gauls to stay out of it. Before they can leave, Asterix, Obelix and Vitalstatistix happen on and defeat the reinforcements that Caesar has hidden for later in the battle. The main battle is a rout, and before Caesar can flee the rival chiefs stop him and ask for his adjudication. He only says they're all equally crazy. This cracks the chiefs up, and the Belgians and Armoricans part as friends.

Summary: Cousin Anticlimax comes from England to ask Asterix for some magic potion to help defeat the invading Romans. Getafix the Druid brews up a barrel of it, and Asterix and Obelix return with Anticlimax to deliver it to the resistance fighters. The Romans figure out who they are and what's in the barrel. A series of searches and chases occurs. The Roman legion gets drunk trying to figure out which barrel has the potion, and a soccer team ends up with the potion for refreshment during a game. Finally the barrel is destroyed before the resistance can use it. Asterix has a few leaves in his pocket that Getafix was going to investigate. He brews them up, and they do the job. Hitherto the Britons had been drinking boiling water, maybe with a spot of milk, but from then on they use this new Druidic discovery, called "tea." The Britons have some strange customs, besides the boiling water business. They drink warm beer, they boil their boars and serve them with mint sauce, and they drive their carts on the wrong side of the road. The story includes a cameo of the Beatles.

Summary: The Gaulish village prepares to celebrate the anniversary of the Gaulish victory over the Romans at Gergovia. As happens every year, the neighboring Roman garrisons leave for maneuvers so that they won't be home when the celebrants decide to bash a few Romans for old time's sake. This year, however, a high-ranking Roman arrives with a prisoner just as the Legionnaires of Totorum are about to sneak away. The prisoner is a Corsican, and the century is obliged to stay and guard him. The Gauls discover that the camp is inhabited, and after a helping of magic potion, they and all their guests take part in taking the Romans apart. They invite the prisoner, whose name is Boneywasawarrior Wayayix, to the celebration and listen to his story. He is being held prisoner because he's a leader in the Corsican tradition of stealing back all the Romans' loot every year before it goes to Caesar. Asterix and Obelix are sent back with Boneywas to learn about Corsica and how the Romans are dealt with there. Boneywas is welcomed back by his clan, with gags to go around about switchblades, vendettas, honor and family. The Roman Praetor learns of the return and sends a patrol into the mountains to capture Boneywas and the Gauls, but he doesn't expect them to capture anybody. His other plan is to load a galley with all the loot and sail away alone, leaving the empty warehouse guarded by the Legionnaires. The Roman patrol in the mountains is defeated by a good stare, and the Corsican clans gather to attack the fort. Because of labor problems, the Praetor has not been able to load his galley, so that all the Romans are beaten up, and all the loot is recovered. Asterix even helps to mend a feud between two clans. Back in Gaul, Asterix tells about all the Roman ruins they saw, "dating from the time of our visit."

Summary: The Romans are mopping up their conquest of the Iberian Peninsula, and, as is true in Gaul, one village remains unintegrated. Chief Huevos y Bacon refuses to deal with the Romans, so the Romans take his son Pepe hostage. The boy is transported to Gaul for safekeeping. After an encounter in the woods, in which Obelix is overjoyed to have some fresh Romans to pummel, Pepe winds up in the Gaulish village in the care of Obelix. The Romans attack to get their hostage back, and are soundly defeated. Finally the Romans decide that having Pepe confined in the Gaulish village actually serves their purpose better than holding him themselves, since he is such a handful. The Romans post a watch around the village. The Gauls figure out Pepe's story, and decide that Asterix and Obelix should return him to his father. Once in Spain, the three travelers encounter lines of Gaulish and Gothic tourists with their houses on wheels, and Don Quixote, and dancing Gypsies, and constant Druidic festivals in the various towns. They are seen by Brontosaurus, the Roman officer who sent Pepe to the north to begin with, and he tries to recapture his hostage. Brontosaurus tries to steal Asterix's magic potion, but Roman soldiers interfere and both Brontosaurus and Asterix are arrested and sent to the arena. Instead of the expected lions, a wild bull runs out. Asterix picks up a red cape dropped by a spectator and initiates the sport of bullfighting. He wins, and is pardoned. Meanwhile, Obelix has taken Pepe back to his father. After a safe trip home to Gaul, Obelix regales the village with Spanish dancing and singing.

Summary: For Varius Flavus, the governor of Condatum (modern-day Rennes), the good life consists of decadent orgies and skimming most of the tax money for his personal use. Rome sends a quaestor (modern-day auditor) to find out why there is so little money coming in, and the governor immediately poisons him. The Roman doctors are ineffectual, so the quaestor sends for the Druid Getafix. Getafix takes the job, on the condition that the quaestor be sent as a hostage to the Gaulish village while Asterix and Obelix travel to Helvetia (modern-day Switzerland) to get an ingredient for the quaestor's cure. The governor is agreeable to this, and sends a message ahead to Helvetia to have Asterix and Obelix killed, thinking that then the Gauls will kill the quaestor and all will be well. The two Gauls are not that easily killed, and soon find that the neat and orderly Swiss people are willing to help them. The Gauls spend the night in the vault of a Swiss bank, and hide dozing in the audience at the International Conference of Tribal Chiefs. They meet yodelers, and a boy with an apple on his head whose father is an archer. They finally make it to the top of a mountain and pick an Edelweiss blossom (the missing ingredient). The quaestor is cured and can continue his audit.

Summary: Puzzled by the problem of the last indomitable Gaulish village, the Romans send a spy to learn the secret of their enormous strength. That done, they capture the Druid Getafix and try to torture the secret of the magic potion out of him. Asterix wonders why Getafix has been gone for so long, and gets captured too. The head of the Roman garrison, Crismus Bonus, wants the potion so he can go to Rome and become Caesar. To have a little fun, Getafix brews up a batch of magic hair-growing potion and the Romans all drink it. After they've run out of hair jokes, Getafix relents and brews an antidote, and also a little cauldron of the strength potion so that he and Asterix can make their escape. Before they can leave, however, Julius Caesar himself turns up and wants to know what's going on. Asterix tells him about Crismus Bonus's plan to become Caesar, and Julius finds that very interesting. He releases Asterix and Getafix without seeing how the potion works. Asterix and Julius promise to meet again.

Summary: The Prefect of Gaul, Odius Asparagus, takes Cacofonix the bard to Rome as a present to Caesar. Caesar says to throw him to the lions in the next games. Asterix and Obelix hitch a ride with Phoenecian traders to Rome to rescue Cacafonix. Once in Rome they sign up for gladiator training in order to get close to where Cacofonix is being held. During the "training" they promise to free the other gladiators, and also teach them some new non-violent games. On the day of the circus, Cacofonix is thrown to the lions as advertised, but he sings to them and empties the arena of both lions and spectators. Order restored, the gladiators come on, throw down their weapons, and start playing parlor games, which enrages Caesar. Asterix tells Caesar that if he wants to see real fighting he should send in some legionnaires. Caesar sends in a cohort, and Asterix and Obelix make short work of them. This pleases the crowd, which was all Caesar wanted to do, so the Gauls leave for home in peace.

Summary: Obelix falls in love with Panacea, who has just returned from two years studying at Condatum. Obelix is heartbroken when he learns that she has a fiancé, Tragicomix, who has been drafted into Caesar's army and is fighting in Africa. Asterix and Obelix enlist in the Roman army in order to find and return Tragicomix to Panacea. Though the Roman military trainers find the task difficult, the Gauls eventually bring the training, and especially the cooking, up to Gaulish standards. Additional comedy is provided by an Egyptian tourist who enlists accidentally and speaks only in hieroglyphics. Once in North Africa, our heroes find that Tragicomix has been taken prisoner by Scipio's army (it's Romans against Romans). Effecting a rescue, and at the same time a victory for Casear, they go home with Caesar's blessing. Obelix is so happy to have his puppy Dogmatix and familiar cooking that he gets over Panacea, and Panacea goes off with Tragicomix to get married.

Asterix versus Caesar

Asterix versus Caesar / translated by Anthea Bell and Derek Hockridge. -- London : Hodder and Stoughton, 1986. -- 62 p. : col. ill. ; 30 cm. -- "From an adaptation by Pierre Tchernia of the books Asterix the Gladiator and Asterix the Legionary." -- "Based on the film Asterix versus Caesar." -- At head of title: Goscinny and Uderzo present an Asterix adventure. -- "The book of the film." -- Call no.: PN6747.U3V413 1986

Summary: This album is not a comic, but rather a series of cels from the animated film with a children's-book style parallel text. Dogmatix, Obelix's pet, plays a greater role than in either of the albums from which the story derives. Both Panacea and Tragicomix are kidnapped by the Romans and sent to be legionaries in North Africa. Asterix and Obelix join the Legion to find and rescue them, but they're sold as slaves before the rescue can be accomplished. Hurrying to Rome, Asterix and Obelix train as gladiators and plan to rescue Panacea and Tragicomix from lions in the Colosseum. Dogmatix comes in with the lions at the last minute carrying a vial of magic potion, to save the day.
