   -- 103 leaves ; 28 cm. -- Thesis (Ph.D.)--Institute of
Advanced Psychological Studies, Adelphi University, 1974.
-- Bibliography: leaves 92-96. -- Photocopy of typescript.
-- Ann Arbor, Mich. : University Microfilms International,
1982. -- 21 cm. -- There is no abstract, but this is a
summarizing passage from leaves 24-25: "The three main
themes in the Superman myth are his origin, his superhuman
qualities, and his dual identity as Clark Kent. The origin
or rebirth and freedom from the mother are in the
background and the main dynamism in the myth is the
Adlerian 'will to power.' Superman is the flying, potent
phallic man who has no need of women, yet women (like Lois
Lane) fall at his feet. This points to the latency
reaction-formation of denying sensuality, and is tinged
with revenge for the mother's Oedipal rejection. Socially,
Superman puts his omnipotence in the service of law and
order, or the collective Superego. Id urges as personified
in psychopaths and criminals are mastered. Love and
approval from society is the reward. The socialization is
further manifested in the duality with Clark Kent. Clark
Kent embodies the feeling of powerlessness and inferiority
of the Oedipal and latency child who in transforming to
Superman is magically reborn as the most socially powerful
adult." -- Chapter 3 compares 10 Superman stories from the
1940s with 10 Superman stories from the 1970s. -- Call no.:
