Summary: Spring is late, and the tribe of
Yakari the Sioux Indian boy is hungry. Yakari can talk to his
horse and to animals, and his companions in the tribe think of
him as a dreamer. Grey Wolf sights buffalo, and the men leave
for the hunt. A storm comes up and washes out the tracks, and
they can't find the buffalo. Back at the camp during the storm,
Yakari dreams of a white buffalo. The next day, with his horse
Little Thunder, he follows hints from his dream out into the
desert hoping to find the buffalo the tribe need to survive. He
comes upon a rock wall, and his bird friend Great Eagle helps
him find a way through it to grazing buffalo on the other side.
A mean buffalo tries to chase Yakari and Little Thunder away,
but the white buffalo Silver Cloud has time to explain. In hard
times the herd stops in the secret place before moving north
for the Spring. Now it's time to go, and the buffalo begin
their trek, while the hunters kill some of them and all is
well.
