The Whisperer Mystery

The Whisperer Mystery / Daniel Torres ; translated from the Spanish by David H. Rosenthal ; edited by Bernd Metz. -- New York : Catalan Communications, 1990. -- 48 p. : col. ill. ; 30 cm. -- (The Astral Adventures of Rocco Vargas ; 2) -- Translation of: El Misterio del Susurro. -- Call no.: PN6777.T6M513 1990

Note: This story summary is done from the 1997 Dark Horse Books collected edition, in which it is called "The Mystery of the Whisperer." An earlier English-language version was serialized as The Whisper Mystery.

Summary: While Venus wages a colonial war on its moon Rhea, Samson, Rocco Vargas's sidekick, gets a present from Jill Covalsky. Jill is working on Uranus, and sends a "toy" robot named Cosmo, who is cute and has considerable skill as a servant. Samson is jealous. A private eye named Archie Cooper is hired to deliver a mysterious message, and Rocco's old friend Kid Panama drops in. Rocco is not pleased to be reminded of his old adventuring days, leaves the house to avoid Kid Panama, and is caught in the middle when Archie delivers his message: "I know about that business with the Koo Legions." Whatever it meant, Archie is being chased by gunmen, and is pinned down with Rocco when Rheamite commandos arrive to attack the men chasing Archie. As the two men flee in Rocco's car, Solar Commissioner Sino's police start chasing them, but Kid Panama shows up in his plane to shoot down the police cars. Back at Rocco's place, a whispering voice on the phone warns Rocco to stay out of it, and at the same time Archie Cooper is killed by a harpoon. Only Cosmo sees who did it, and he beans the aquatic creature with a bottle. Commissioner Sino himself shows up to investigate the killing. The next day the employer of Archie Cooper visits Rocco, and when the aquatic Wirz arrive with harpoons, the employer reveals herself to be Scarlet Clover, the leader of the Rheamite commandos. She had used Cooper as bait to get to The Whisperer, who is trying to control the source of a drug called Krop, grown on Rhea and made difficult to get because of the war. On Rhea, a Venusian reporter named Lynx sees a ceiling fan explode and associates it with the Koo Legions. On Earth, Scarlet sends Rocco's adoring but romantically overlooked secretary, Ruby, to plant a bomb in a warehouse of ceiling fans, and Ruby gets caught. Rocco, Samson, Cosmo and Kid Panama rescue Ruby, but The Whisperer gets away with his load of ceiling fans, helped by a police escort. Scarlet steals Rocco's ship, the Distant Star, and heads for Rhea.

-- Summary: Near the town of Nugget Gulch, Lucky Luke meets
a bearded man who calls himself John the Philanthropist.
John says he's a peaceful man, and that the notches on his
revolver aren't his, because he just found it and doesn't
really use it well. When a cobra comes from behind a rock
and John draws and kills it in one swift motion, Lucky Luke
has to wonder about his story. In Nugget Gulch a horse race
is planned for the next day. Since John and Lucky Luke are
both low on money, they both decide to enter. John has seen
Jolly Jumper run, and knows he can't beat such a horse, but
he enters the race anywhow. Betting is heavy on the race,
and a series of colorful charcters are entered, including a
Mexican rider named "Pedro Nice Chink" riding a mule named
"Flower of the Orient," and a overweight man called "Texas
Slim." When Lucky Luke goes to get Jolly Jumper for the
race, he finds the horse missing. The race starts without
Lucky Luke. John the Philanthropist's horse is black, until
a rain shower washes the stain off and the stolen Jolly
Jumper is revealed. Lucky Luke whistles, and Jolly Jumper
dumps John into a rain barrel. Lucky Luke and Jolly Jumper
are win the race together, inspired by an electric shock
after a collision with a telegraph pole. John steals all
the money and runs for it on his own horse. Lucky Luke
telegraphs ahead to Rattlesnake Valley, and has "poison"
signs put on all the water holes in the desert. John is
soon crazy with thirst and easily caught. Lucky Luke has
