The Voyage The Voyage / V. Segrelles. -- New York :
NBM, 1995. -- 46 p. : col. ill. ; 28 cm. -- (The Mercenary) -- NBM numbering:
5. -- Translated into English by Lawrence Schimel. --
Call no.: PN6777.S4V613 1995
"Exoskeleton" 16 p. -- Summary: The Mercenary
is flying over the ocean and spots an unfamiliar island.
Landing to rest and get water, he rescues a telepathic winged
woman from a giant spider's web, and while he's doing that a
city of insect men steals his dragon. In order to get his
dragon back he impersonates an insect lord, conveniently
fulfilling a prophecy, and fights the king. The Mercenary
boasts that he can do something the king cannot, and removes
the breastplate of his armor. The king then removes the front
plate of his exoskeleton, but after that he cannot fight. The
insect men then realize that he is a human and attack, and as
he is falling off a cliff towards the maw of a great big
monster, four winged women catch him in midair, take him to his
dragon, and send him on his way. The canteen of water they give
him is deadly with radioactivity.
"The Flight" 7 p. -- Summary: From a tower
on an island floating in the air, The Mercenary is determined
to try Arnoldo Da Vinci's set of wings and fly under his own
muscle power. Nan-Tay is worried, but The Mercenary kisses her
and jumps anyway. The wings work, but suddenly as he's
approaching the tower where he started, he starts to bleed and
fall, and he heads for a lower landing far over the water. We
see a young boy commenting to his Uncle Claust that the bird he
just shot as target practice looked like a man flying.
"The Lighthouse" 21 p. -- Summary: The
wings, the kiss, and the target practice were all a dream
induced by the radioactive water. The dragon is also panicked
and wounded, but they make it to an island with a lighthouse.
The keepers communicate telepathically, giving him pills to
counter the poisoning, and send them toward another island,
smoking in the distance. Before they can leave, fearful
refugees from that island land near them. They call this island
The Black Isle, and are convinced spirits or ghosts will kill
them for landing on it. The Mercenary leads an expedition back
to the smoking island to which the lighthouse has moved. The
lighthouse seems to have anti-gravity powers. Using the
information gained telepathically he moves it back to The Black
Isle, in turn causing a volcanic eruption which releases a ship
of some kind from the insides of the island. For some reason
the ship saves the island people and their boat from the
tsunami wave caused by the eruption.
