Summary: Wanda and Gregor Severin have an arrangement, that she acts the great lady and he the servant to be constantly whipped and otherwise punished. Wanda has assumed all the power in the relationship, makes Gregor follow at least eight yards back when they are in public, and demands that he wear nothing under his suit. Gregor writes up events after they happen, and spies on her through a keyhole, to produce the narrative we are reading. Wanda brings in several helpers to provide sexual interest: three women named Haffedah, Zorrah and Sahadia, and a military officer. At the end Gregor is on a psychoanalyst's couch, and pronounces himself cured.
