Summary: A woman kills two Yakuza and steals the head of Johann Schneidkopf, the man they were guarding. Johann is a Rememberer, a professional courier of large software dumps. Nathan Never is called in to solve the case, along with agent Al Goodman. The Alpha Agency hesitates to take the case because the software wasn't legal, but they are assured it will be, after a Patent Commission meeting in a few weeks. The first puzzle is why somebody needed Schneidkopf's head, when the basis of the information should have been in his cerebral infobox, an implant that could have been removed without taking his whole head. The agents visit Professor Wolfgang Schoeller, a child genius who loaded the information, and he says the software wasn't encrypted in any way that would have made decapitation necessary. Wolfie tells them to ask Schneidkopf's endorphin peddler, Sissy, a performer in a club called Absolute Pleasure. The agents fight with Sissy's bodyguards, Susan and Piero, and leave Absolute Pleasure without learning anything. Al comes back with a taxi and gives Sissy a wild ride, making her talk. Schneidkopf had been absent for a year, then last month came asking for a new kind of pills. With him was another Rememberer, named Dalila Graham. Meanwhile the woman who took the head is in a motel reminiscing with it about Elizabeth Messina, a psychology graduate student who had been doing a dissertation on Rememberers: "acquired memory phenomenology." It is revealed that Dalila Graham had an affair with Schneidkopf, but that she's been dead for quite a while. Schneidkopf had tried to get Elizabeth to replace her, and she had gone along with it to the extent of having plastic surgery and Rememberer implants. Nathan and Al find the doctor who maintained Dalila's implants, and he tells them about Elizabeth, but not before the Yakuza have already gotten to him. Elizabeth has put a special enhanced chip in her implant, and has become Dalila, and crazy, and very dangerous. She kills two more carloads of Yakuza before agents Never and Goodman get to her, but they do, and she dies.
