The Sword of King Arthur, part 1The Sword of King Arthur, (part 1) / script, Alfredo Castelli ; art, Giancarlo Alessandrini ; translation, Hazim Kazic ; dialogue, Reed Chaval. -- Milwaukie, OR: Dark Horse Comics, 1999. -- (Martin Mystery ; 2) -- Includes two pages of text by Alfredo Castelli, on the Arthur legend, Glastonbury, and related archaeology. -- 100 p. -- Call no.: PN6768.M3313 1999v.2Summary: Adolf Hitler arranges to have the Heilige Lance, with which supposedly Christ was wounded, moved from Vienna to Nuremberg where its mystic powers could help him rule. At the fall of the Third Reich, the sword passed to the Americans, who have it returned to Vienna. Near the end of the war, however, two men named Heinz Schmesser and Konrad Fries, part of an ancient brotherhood, had replaced the sword with a replica and hidden the original in a Swiss bank. They vow that the secret of its location should die with them. When Konrad Fries dies in Paris years later, his son sells his books including a diary with part of the information about the sword in it. Martin's old nemesis, Sergei Orloff, kills the bookseller and takes the diary. Two months after this, Martin and Java, along with an author named Von Eriksen who writes on prehistorical alien visitations, travel to a convention in Vienna, and Martin goes to visit his old friend Schmesser. Schmesser seems preoccupied, and his daughter Hilda says he seems afraid. That night Martin and Java stay with the Schmessers, and thugs break in. They capture one thug, who says they were hired to look for a key, and let the other three go so Java can follow them. They report their failure to Orloff, who kills them with a ray gun. When Orloff sees Java he knows that Martin Mystery is on the case. Meanwhile Schmesser has had a heart attack, and with his dying breath tells Martin and Hilda the story. He says that the "Heilige Lance" is also the sword called Excalibur, which has had many names. It was originally forged for Arthur, and was the secret of the unification of England as well as the secret behind Hitler's power. He tells them where the key to the safe deposit box is, but says they also need a code which will only be available in the stolen diary. He asks them to destroy the sword by returning it to the stone from which Arthur pulled it. Von Eriksen turns up at the funeral, hears the word "Excalibur," and starts following them everywhere. Traveling to Paris, Hilda Schmesser visits the Louvre where she meets Von Eriksen, who asks her a lot of questions. Martin and Java visit Paul Fries, who directs them to the bookseller who purchased the diary. There's a new owner of the bookstore, and the police are still investigating the previous owner's death and so arrest Martin and Java. An old friend, Commissioner Charlier, is in charge of the investigation, so he frees them and explains that the murdered book dealer had sent a photocopy of the diary to the police, so they were on the lookout for anybody interested in the diary. Martin gets a look at the photocopies, and he, Java and Hilda fly to Zurich and open the box. (to be continued) This summary is from European Comics in English

The Sword of King Arthur, part 2The Sword of King Arthur, part 2 / Alfredo Castelli, script ; Giancarlo Alessandrini, art ; Hazim Kazic, translation ; Reed Chaval, dialogue. -- Milwaukie, OR: Dark Horse Comics, 1999. -- (Martin Mystery ; 3) -- 100 p. Call no.: PN6768.M3313 1999v.3Summary: After retrieving the sword Excalibur from the vault of a bank in Zurich, Martin begins to read the notes that had been left with it by Hilda Schmesser's father. A Brotherhood of Initiates is described, followers of Merlin the Magician, that has been trying to neutralize the sword for centuries. According to them the sword must be taken to Avalon. To find Avalon, the messages on three crosses must be colocated: one at Glastonbury (England), one at Modena (Italy) and one at Otranto or Taranto (Italy). The first is shown in a drawing, but the drawings of the other two have been eaten by Swiss bank bookworms. On the train from Zurich to Italy, Sergei Orloff and his men catch up with Martin, Java and Hilda. Sergei reminisces about how he and Martin were students of the teacher Kut Humi in Tibet years ago, and each given a ten thousand year old weapon. Orloff's ray gun can kill, but Martin Mystery's ray can only paralyze. Still, Mystery has been coming out ahead in their encounters, and Orloff is embittered and disfigured. This time he demands the sword, and Martin takes it out, concentrates, and suddenly Orloff and his men lower their weapons, the train stops, and they all jump off in silence. The power of Excalibur is demonstrated: Martin had just made a wish that they would go away. In Modena, they find and photograph a stone cross with an Arthurian message in the cathedral floor. Next near Taranto they find the "Tower of Taranto" and mention Horace Walpole. Nearby is a cave with the stone and their piece of the puzzle, and also a flashbulb that lets them know Von Eriksen has been there before them. Piecing the three crosses together produces a cryptic map, which suggests a round table or plain, or maybe Stonehenge. Arriving in Salisbury, England, they decide to wait until the tourists have left to approach Stonehenge. While they are waiting, Hilda is kidnapped by Orloff's men and held hostage for the sword. At midnight at Stonehenge, Martin hands over the sword. Orloff begins to gloat, but Von Eriksen shoots Orloff and the tables are turned. Von Eriksen really doesn't care about the sword, except that it might be an alien artifact, and so they proceed to insert the sword in a slot in a rock in the center of Stonehenge. Inserting the sword activates a mechanism that transports all five of them to Avalon, where Merlin the Magician talks to them from a video monitor. Merlin shows them pictures of aliens landing with a broken navigational computer, and forcing the native Cimbri tribesmen to build Stonehenge as an astronomical calculating device for their spaceship. One tribesman, named Art, came to Merlin for help. As one of the Initiated Brothers, Merlin had access to a time capsule full of old technology, and decided to make an exception. He reworked an old brain wave obstructor into the form of a sword, and Art was able to chase the aliens away. Arthur then refused to return the sword and thus became its first victim. Now that the sword has been replaced, the menace is gone. Von Eriksen is elated to learn that there really were aliens involved, and that his books have not all been "just stupid." Martin Mystery reminds him that the technology that defeated the aliens was apparently on Earth long before the aliens arrived, and that that's an even older mystery.
