SkyRiver): Year 1108 in the official calendar of the Pajan
Empire. This turbulent age, often called the Asagiri Era or
the Time of Mists, saw the great clans wage decades-long
wars in attempts to seize power. Far from the fields of
battle, Okko the ronin heads a small group of demon
hunters, wandering the realms of Empire. He is accompanied
by Noburo, a mysterious giant who hides his face behind a
red mask, and the whimsical monk Noshin, the sake lover
with the power to summon and commune with the spirits of
nature. When Tikku's sister Little Carp is kidnapped by
pirates, the young fisherman enlists the group's help in
finding her. But the quest will have a price, and will lead

imagined. The first of five Cycles by French comics master

Pecos River.
   Law of the Desert Born : a Graphic Novel / Louis L'Amour ;
adapted by Charles Santino ; script by Beau L'Amour and
Katherine Nolan ; based on the short story by Louis L'Amour
; produced by Beau L'Amour ; illustrated by Thomas Yeates.
   -- New York : Bantam Books, 2013. -- 152 p. : ill., map ;
32 cm. -- Summary (from publiher via SkyRiver): "The first
graphic novel adaptation of the work of master storyteller
Louis L'Amour is a dynamic tale of the Old West that
explores the borderlands of loyalty and betrayal with the
emotional grittiness of a noir thriller. New Mexico, 1887,
a land in the midst of the worst drought anyone can
remember. Family histories and loyalties run deep, but when
rancher Tom Forrester has his access to the Pecos River cut
off by the son of his old partner, he convinces his
foreman, Shad Marone, to pay Jud Bowman back for the
discourtesy. Yet what starts as a simple act of petty
revenge quickly spirals into a cycle of violence that no
one can control. Now Marone is on the run, pursued by a
sheriff's posse across a rugged desert landscape. Leading
the chase is Jesus Lopez, a half-Mexican, half-Apache with
a personal stake in bringing Shad to justice. Newly
released from jail, trusted by no one, Lopez swears he's
the only man who can track Marone down. That may be true.

"Flaming Arrows of the Son of Fire" 7 p. in Redskin, no. 3
(Feb. 1951). -- Summary: David Brown is a White man who
grew up with the Arapaho Indians. He is called Tonagwah, or
Son of Fire, because he fights with flaming arrows.
Tonagwah has dedicated his life to making "peace between
Red men and White." Crooked Indian Agent Charley Cole has
been illegally selling guns to renegades like Yellow Dog.
Agent Cole kidnaps Enid, daughter of Lt. Fernald of the
cavalry. Tonagwah is trying to figure out how to rescue
Enid and stop the flow of guns, when he comes upon an
itinerant Chinese fireworks peddler named Chief Charlie,
who is drawn in exaggerated stereotype. The Indians are
afraid of fireworks so Chief Charlie's stock helps save the
   day. -- Call no.: PN6728.2.Y6R4no.3

"The Music Maker" (John Wayne) 10 p. in John Wayne
Adventure Comics, no. 15 (July 1952) -- Summary (by
Kristine Baclawski): John Wayne comes upon a raid on the
homestead of Mr. Rumson and his daughter. He tries to draw
the fire of the outlaws away from the house, but he is
outnumbered six to one. Suddenly the gunfight is
interrupted by the appearance of a peddler's wagon. The
driver is singing at the top of his lungs, which for some
reason causes the marauders to flee. The singer introduces
himself as Ben Weber, a music teacher wishing to set up
shop in Purple Valley. Introductions complete, the two
check on the Rumsons, whos home is in flames. Wayne
arranges for Weber to take the Rumsons into town. Miss
Rumson seems to recognize Ben Weber, but he denies ever
being in Purple Valley before. A few days later, John Wayne
meets Miss Rumson on the way to a music lesson, and it's
obvious that there's a romance budding. While in the barber
shop, Wayne hears gunfire and singing as the bank is being
robbed, and begins to think Ben may be the ringleader of
the robbers. With the help of the sheriff, and the
reluctant Miss Rumson, Wayne lays a trap for the gang
during the stage shipment of some ore. While Miss Rumson is
at her music lesson, the trap is sprung. Wayne catches the
leader and brings him to town, where everyone realizes
there seems to be two Ben Webers. One of them, the gang
leader, is Ben's twin brother, Rafe. -- Call no.:
