Outer States

Outer States / Enki Bilal ; translated by Elizabeth Bell. -- New York : Catalan Communications, 1990. -- 48 p. : col. ill. ; 28 cm. -- Translation of: Memoires d'Outre-Espace. -- CONTENTS: A Colonial Tale ; In the Name of the Father, and of the Gun ; The Last Round of Talks ; Planet of No Return ; The Death of Orlaon ; Breakdown ; Another Colonial Tale ; The Plitch. -- Science fiction genre. -- Call no.: PN6747.B5M313 1990

"A Colonial Tale" p. 3-10 -- Summary: The Grabulbs (also called Grabulids, Garbulbs, Bargulbs, Barglubs, Blagurbs, and Glubarbs) are pacifists, but the colonial humans need them to fight against the Arcturans. An irreversible programming is performed on the Grabulbs, which causes the color red (the color of the Arcturan uniforms) to infuriate them. After the victory the President and the General wear red capes in the victory parade.

"In the Name of the Father, and of the Gun" p. 11-14 -- Summary: A clergyman has made a robot, named Ernest, and given him a soul, but retains the power to turn the robot off. Ernest rebels, and does surgery on his maker, implanting a destruct mechanism that kills the man when he tries to use his switch.

"The Last Round of Talks" p. 15-18 -- Summary: Human diplomats to the Gloobs, a species with detachable heads, keep failing because the Gloobs insist on everybody leaving their bodies outside the negotiating chamber.

"Planet of No Return" p. 18-25 -- Summary: Fel-Sarma 2 is on his way to see Earth for the first time, when he's forced to land on a planet from which three expeditions, including that of his own father, have failed to return. He hears a noise approaching, and returns to his ship to find it has become tiny. Actually he has grown larger, as he figures out when the approaching sound turns out to be Fel-Sarma 1 out for a walk. The giant Fel-Sarma 1 steps on his son and kills him without noticing.

"The Death of Orlaon" p. 26-29 -- Summary: The fierce warrior Orlaon meets and kills 300 of himself before being killed by another himself.

"Breakdown" / story by Pierre de la Varch. p. 30-31 -- Summary: An android goes to confession, talks about being in love, and the priest calls a repair truck.

"Another Colonial Tale" p. 32-38 -- Summary: A blue alien woman rescues a robot from quicksand. The solitary human colonist wants to try interbreeding with her species, but the robot gets jealous and kills him. Then a blue alien man shows up, and the robot kills itself, much to the puzzlement of the alien couple.

"The Plitch" p. 39-48 -- Summary: Large populations of people and animals are disappearing, and the only clue in each case is a floating pink thing that goes 'plitch.' The government cover story is that it's an epidemic and that everybody's in a clinic in Albania. Soon the whole population of Earth is missing, except for top government leaders of communist and Nato countries, who meet in Albania and kill each other off. The Plitch leaves the planet with a big load of kidnapped people and animals.
