Fragments

Fragments / Andréas ; Elizabeth Bell, J.-M. & R. Lofficier, translation ; David Jackson, lettering. -- New York: Nantier Beall Minoustchine, 1990. -- 53 p. : ill. ; 28 cm. -- (Rork ; 1) -- An album of seven chapters, which begin to be connected with chapter three, serialized in six parts in Cheval Noir. -- The original album title in French is also Fragments. -- Fantasy genre. -- Call no.: PN6747.A542R6713 1990
Chapter 1: "A House, a Century" 7 p. -- Summary: Rork, who is a kind of ghostbuster, visits the half-ruined home of writer Bernard Wright to investigate some strange happenings. The house is on a cliff near the ocean. Underwater people show up and tell Rork, who knows their language, that they need Wright to leave the house so they can recharge their sun, which they do every 100 years. Rork convinces Wright to leave and the recharging takes place, finishing the ruination of the house. The character Bernard Wright is modeled after American artist Bernie Wrightson. This chapter was first published in English in Cheval Noir, no. 1 (Aug. 1989)

Chapter 2: "The Fatal Point" 7 p. -- Summary: In a forest north of Wheatley-End, under the two oldest trees, known as the "Devil's Horns," a wizard named Adam Niels has built a hut. Adam has figured out how to make any sphere self-destruct by sticking a pin in a certain point on it, and has further determined that his hut is on the Earth's destruct point. Whenever he tries his procedure, spheres for miles around break in sympathy, and the villagers are sick of losing lamps. The villagers go to the hut intent on destroying it, and Adam worries what might happen. Just then a gigantic pin from outer space pokes a hole through the hut into the ground, but nothing else happens. This chapter was first published in English in Cheval Noir, no. 2 (Oct. 1989)

Chapter 3: "The Stain" 7 p. -- Summary: The little village of Alien's Point has an art museum, and director Ebenezer Aldridge gets a visit from Rork, who has concocted a new compound for restoring paintings. Ebenezer's assistant Wilbur Stiffel returns from a trip with a load of bargain paintings, and Ebenezer uses the compound on a stained painting. The stain attaches itself to Ebenezer and makes him behave strangely, and Rork uses his compound again to make the stain fly off into space. This chapter was first published in English in Cheval Noir, no. 3 (Nov. 1989)

Chapter 4: "Low Valley" 7 p. -- Summary: Rork is looking over a barren clearing called Low Valley, when he sees a young woman start to walk across it and collapse. He runs to help and encounters a force field, but by concentrating is able to get through and carry the unconscious woman out of the sun to a cave. He explores the cave, and she wakes up with amnesia. Rork names her 'Low Valley' and takes her home to recuperate. This chapter was first published in English in Cheval Noir, no. 5 (Mar. 1990)

Chapter 5: "Fragments" 6 p. -- Summary: Low Valley is dreaming at Rork's house, and begins to disassemble it. She dreams about a puzzle, and a big chunk of wall floats out over Rork's head. While Rork is fetching a stonemason to fix the wall, Low Valley falls asleep again and Rork returns to find his whole house floating in the air in dozens of irregular pieces. Rather than wake her up, Rork works his way into Low Valley's dream and gingerly reverses the process. He takes her to a cabin in the woods where her power isn't as likely to be destructive. This chapter was first published in English in Cheval Noir, no. 6 (Apr. 1990)

Chapter 6: "The Return of the Stain" 7 p. -- Summary: A meteorite falls, and Rork investigates it on his way to visit Low Valley. He sees nothing of particular interest about the meteorite, but finds that Ebenezer Aldridge is visiting Low Valley in her cabin. Ebenezer had also been investigating the meteorite. Low Valley has remembered her real name: Deliah Darkthorne. The Stain, the alien symbiote that had earlier possessed Ebenezer, now has both Ebenezer and Deliah in its power. They knock Rork down, and leave for New York. This chapter was first published in English in Cheval Noir, no. 7 (May 1990)

Chapter 7: "In New York" 5 p. -- Summary: Rork has been lured to New York by the Stain, and survives a death trap in an elevator. The Stain, using the bodies and powers of Deliah Darkthorne and Ebenezer Aldridge, sets Rork up to be crushed onto a pile of dynamite boxes by a falling elevated train on Eighth Avenue. This chapter was first published in English in Cheval Noir, no. 7 (May 1990)
