New York/MiamiNew York/Miami / stories by Philippe Paringaux ; illustrated by Jacques de Loustal ; translated from the French original by Elizabeth Bell. -- New York : Catalan Communications, 1990. -- 64 p. : col. ill. ; 32 cm. -- A collection of stories. -- First appeared in Pilote-Mensuel in 1980. -- Call no.: PN6747.L6N413 1990"New York Miami" p. 3-6 -- Summary: In a story told in large side-captioned panels, a narrator in New York, then Miami, describes moments. He has a small packet of something in his pocket at a moment on the Brooklyn elevated, and it is taken from his coat in a hotel in Miami Beach. A man on Rockaway Beach has strange eyes, and he sees the eyes again in Key Biscayne. The implication is that the narrator is a courier for some illegal substance, but perhaps not a successful one. "Blues" p. 8-11 -- Summary: Large panels with rhyming captions tell about a hard life in the ghetto, and a whitey killed in an alley. The scene changes, and we see that a blond man has been singing it to a bald man by a pool, and they agree it will go gold or platinum. "Cruisin' in a Buick" p. 13-16 -- Summary: Remy picks up Denise from the beach in his pink Buick. After awhile she asks to drive, and hits a dog. Denise becomes aroused and they climb into the back seat. The next day they go for a drive as well, but nothing happens. Third day she hits a couple of dachshunds, and is again interested in sex. And so on, until Remy says he's going back to Paris tomorrow, and there aren't many dogs left anyhow. On their last drive, Denise hits an old couple walking their poodle, then takes the Buick off a cliff at 120 mph. "Miss Fan USA" p. 18-23 -- Summary: A girl in New York dreams of being a groupie, and even contrives to get a backstage pass, but is ignored by the celebrities. She goes back home to her teddy bear, in tears. "La Vie en Blues" p. 25-27 -- Summary: Six large panels with rhymed captions. Scenes show African Americans on railroad tracks, streets, in bars, and in prison. "The Great White Hunter" p. 29-35 -- Summary: A European hunter in tropical Africa drinks and finally gets up the courage to shoot himself, and the animals are safe. Half-page panels with captions. "The Question" p. 37-40 -- Summary: A chauffeur in Miami goes to bed with a woman. Story without words until the final panel, in which she asks, "Is it me or is it my money?" "Marcello" p. 42-45 -- Summary: A man in a hat accompanies Marcello to an office where they kill another man. The man in the hat is upset that Marcello forgets to kiss him afterwards. The man in the hat wants Marcello to come up for a drink, but Marcello drops him off at the corner. "Apricot Juice, a 6.35 and a Stuck Horn" p. 47-50 -- Summary: A man in a bar orders apricot juice, finds a gun in the restroom as planned, kills two pool players and runs outside to jump into a waiting DeSoto. Another man reaches into the car and shoots the first man, who falls forward onto the horn. Large panels with side captions. "Keep Cool, Johnny" p. 52-53 -- Summary: Johnny can't take life in the city, and is afraid to come out of his room. He screws up his courage and moves to a boring town in the Midwest. Happy ending. Six side-captioned panels. "Manolete, One More Time" p. 55-64 -- Summary: Luis sneaks back into Franco's Spain to remember his dead comrades. He visits his old sweetheart, who chose Diego instead of him. He sees fear in her eyes. Luis goes to a bullfight, and afterward sees an old acquaintance, the one who had Diego shot. Luis is followed, and killed. This summary is from European Comics in English
