Summary: In Rennes-le Château, France, in 1892, a village priest mysteriously has enough money to renovate his church and practically the whole town. In Greenwich Village, 100 years later, Diana and Java fabricate a mystery about the Catalonian architect Antonio Gaudi to get Martin Mystery out of their hair while his apartment is being renovated. Martin takes the bait, does some library research, and soon heads for Barcelona to check out Gaudi's cathedral, the Sagrada Familia. The story is didactic, with summaries of the life of Gaudi, the mystery at Rennes-le-Château, the history of the Gnostics, the Manichaeans, Bogomils, the Cathars, the Albigenses, and the cult of Mary Magdalene. In Barcelona, Martin contacts another researcher, Rafael Martinez, who has been stricken with a kind of amnesia after trying to investigate something in the cathedral. Martin finds a secret crypt in the Sagrada Familia, and meets there with the sect of current protectors of the secret knowledge of the gravesite of Mary Magdalene. It develops that the cathedral was re-designed during construction by Gaudi in 1896, in order to provide protection for the Philosopher's Stone. This stone, which can turn base metals into gold, was the source of the priests's wealth in Rennes-le-Château and was for a time buried with Mary Magdalene in that village. Martinez turns up at the meeting with a gun, his memory recovered. He used to belong to a sect, the "men in black," whose mission is to protect the world from evidence of extraterrestrial visitations. The Philosopher's Stone is an alien artifact that must be hidden, they believe, but Martinez wants to use it for personal gain. While holding everybody at gunpoint he touches the stone, and the Sagrada Familia gains a new, solid-gold statue.

(by Mary Walker): Lana Lang reports on mysterious sightings
of a 'super-Batman'. Kent calls Bruce Wayne and leaves a
message with Alfred that he has a good reason for what he
is doing and will explain later. He recalls how Lana had
some Pan-pipes which her father found with a statue of the
god and how he experienced an excruciating pain when she
blew on them. Later he looks in the mirror and finds he has
grown horns. He realizes that the syrinx, or pipes, may be
the cure but he has to find them because they have been
stolen. To hide what has happened he adopts Batman's cowl
and cape in place of his own cape. He uses the horns to
capture the superstitious thief before the spell dissipates
taking the horns with them. He tells Bruce about the
episode and asks, "How do you ever manage to scare anyone
in that get-up of yours?" -- Call no.: PN6728.1.N3S8no.405
