classique." -- English summary (from p. 137): "Chris Ware's
Extraordinary Plan: Though still practically unknown in
France, Chris Ware, a young artist from Chicago, is fast
becoming idolized in the U.S. thanks to the 7 issues to
date of an amazing periodical he single-handedly
orchestrates: The Acme Novelty Library (published by
Fantagraphics Books). Chris Ware's work not only
demonstrates absolute mastery of graphism, typography and
the possibilities of digital technology, he also completely
recycles a specifically American cultural heritage,
mimicing or inventing emblematic characters such as
Superman, Big Tex or Quimby the Mouse, as Jean-Christophe
Menu shows. Yet, it is the pitiable character Jimmy
Corrigan who, represented at different ages, embodies the
most personal and touching part of his work. Ware proves
that extreme formalism does not obstruct emotion." -- Call
