The Man from Harlem

The Man from Harlem / Guido Crepax ; translation by Tom Leighton. -- New York : Catalan Communications, 1987. -- 52 p. : col. ill. ; 30 cm. -- Call no.: PN6767.C7M3 1987

Summary: Little Johnny Lincoln is a black jazz bass player who impulsively rescues a white woman, named Polly, from mob killers. He hides Polly in his apartment while they try to figure out what to do. The killers have almost figured out what he did and come to his shows, watching him. Lincoln's mother and girlfriend are upset by Polly's presence, and finally Polly leaves, tries to go to the police, and is gunned down in the street. The mob tries to run Lincoln down with a car, but he sacrifices his bass and gets away. Johnny swears revenge, gets a gun, and goes after the killer, but somebody else kills the killer first. A white player gets a gig in California and offers Lincoln his job in New York, and loans him an instrument. The story probably takes place in 1955, since on page 20 Lincoln talks about playing all night with Charlie Parker, who died in 1955, and in the same panel buys a Village Voice, which began publication in 1955.

This summary is from European Comics in English Translation (Jefferson, NC : McFarland & Company, 2002). Used with permission.

"Leading writers discuss, debate, and celebrate the legend
of Superman in this anthology, contending that his legend
is a truly American myth. Superman was an immigrant with
little more than the clothes on his back and raised by
simple farmers, absorbing their humble values. He always
chose to do the right thing, fighting for truth, justice,
and the American way, and represents America at its best.
The in-depth analyses of the comics, films and cartoons are
at turns funny, philosophical, insightful, and personal,
