Stargazing / Jen Wang ; color by Lark Pien. -- New York :
   First Second, 2019. -- 208 p. : col. ill. ; 21 cm. -- "Moon
is everything Christine isn't. She's confident, impulsive,
artistic; and though they both grew up in the same
Chinese-American suburb, Moon is somehow unlike anyone
Christine has ever known. When Moon's family moves in next
door to Christine's, Moon goes from unlikely friend to best
friend, maybe even the perfect friend. The girls share
their favorite music videos, paint their toenails when
Christine's strict parents aren't around, and make plans to
enter the school talent show together. Moon even tells
Christine her deepest secret: that she sometimes has
visions of celestial beings who speak to her from the
stars. Who reassure her that Earth isn't where she really
belongs. But when they're least expecting it, catastrophe
strikes. After relying on Moon for everything, can
Christine find it in herself to be the friend Moon needs?"

Summary (from OCLC): From Snow White to Moana, the animated
films of Walt Disney Studios have moved and entertained
millions. But few fans know that behind these
groundbreaking features was an incredibly influential group
of women who fought for respect in an often ruthless
male-dominated industry and who have slipped under the
radar for decades. Holt shows how these women infiltrated
the boys' club of Disney's story and animation departments
and used early technologies to create the rich artwork and
unforgettable narratives that have become part of the
American canon. While battling sexism, domestic abuse, and
workplace intimidation, these women also fought to
transform the way female characters are depicted to young
audiences. -- A book about women animators. -- Call no.:

Cartooning for a Modern Egypt / by Keren Zdafee. -- Leiden :

and Archaeology of the Islamic World ; v. 13) -- Includes
   bibliographical references (p. 235-241) and index. --
Summary (from publisher via OCLC): "The Egyptian caricature
is generally studied as part of Egyptian mass culture, and
mainly discussed in the context of Egypt's anti-colonial
resistance to British foreign rule, as part of the forging
of a "national style". In Cartooning for a Modern Egypt,
Keren Zdafee foregrounds the role that Egypt's
foreign-local entrepreneurs and caricaturists played in
formulating and constructing the modern Egyptian caricature
of the interwar years, that was designated for, and
reflected, a colonial and cosmopolitan culture of a few.
Keren Zdafee illustrates how Egyptian foreign-local
caricaturists envisioned and evaluated the past, present,
and future of Egyptian society, in the context of Cairo's
colonial cosmopolitanism, by adopting a theoretical,
semiotic, and historical approach." -- Call no.:

Tall Tales in Comic Diction : from Literature to Graphic

-- (Focal Point ; Bd. 13) -- Doctoral thesis, Universität
   Duisburg-Essen, 2012 -- Includes bibliographical
references. -- "Every medium tells stories in its own
idiosyncratic way. Consequently, if we transfer a narrative
from one medium to another, points of friction will occur,
the identification of which may allow us to draw
conclusions as to the narrative potential of the target
medium. Thus, comic adaptations of literary texts should be
of major interest for the study of comics as well as for
intermediality studies, yet they have hardly been
investigated as to their narrative qualities in contrast to
their source texts so far." -- Call no.: PN6710.B64 2013

references and index. -- Contents: White ghost's burden and

foreign policy ; Apartheid and antiracism ; The women's
movement and gender politics ; When the Phantom became
Swedish. -- "This book is about the Phantom in Sweden, or,
more correctly, about Sweden in the Phantom. Robert Aman
uncovers how a peripheral American superhero - created in
1936 by Lee Falk - that has been accused of both racism and
sexism has become a national concern in a country that
several researchers have labelled the most antiracist and
gender equal in the world. When a group of Swedish creators
began their official production of licensed scripts based
on The Phantom comic in 1972, the character was redefined
through the prism of New Left ideology. The plots of these
comics, besides aiming to entertain, also sought to affirm
for readers the righteousness and validity of an
ideological doctrine that, at the time, was dominant among
the Swedish public and influential in the country's foreign
policy. Ultimately, Aman demonstrates how the Swedish
Phantom embodies values and a political point of view that
reflect how Sweden sees itself and its role in the world."

examines Hong Kong's struggle against the disappearance of
its unique identity under the historical challenges of
colonialism, in addition to the more recent reimposition of
Chinese authoritarian government control, as reflected in
three under-researched forms of visual media: comics,
advertising and graphic design. Each section of the book
focuses on one of these three forms, and each chapter
focuses on one stage of Hong Kong's changing cultural
identity. The articulat ive position of this book is on
studies of visual cultural history and media communication.
Its case studies will broaden readers' own cultural
knowledge for a more international understanding. The

Around the decade of the fifties in Peru, like in other
parts of Latin America, the migratory movement from the
country to the city was intensified and had the effect of a
total change in the traditional social structures, as well
as a questioning of concepts like identity and nation. Amid
this crisis scenario, the popular newspaper Última Hora,
one of those with the most circulation at the national
level, decided to replace foreign comics with local strips
with characters intended to represent each population
sector and, at the same time, reflect on Peruvian identity
in a period of change. Starting from the analysis of the
comics of Última Hora and especially of 'Serrucho,' the
first comic strip, whose main character is an immigrant in
the capital, we will study the role of the media in the
construction of an imagined community and the missed
connections of a still unfinished project of nationhood."

production of the magazine O Tico-Tico, the longest-running
publication of comics in Brasil. The magazine, which would

Brazilian artists the possibility of working on comics and

Comic in Swahili or Swahili Comic? / Rose Marie Beck. -- 1999.
   -- p. 67-101 : ill. ; 28 cm. -- Offprint or photocopy from
   Afrikanistische Arbeitspapiere, no. 60 (1999). -- Summary
(from OCLC): As a subject of scientific interest Western
comics (i.e. the European, American, Japanese comics) have
achieved some recognition. From its beginnings in the 1890s
the comic has been an economic success, and gradually
gained importance in the contemporary cultural production
of Western societies. However, only with a development that
finally met the tastes of a Western intellectual
readership, scientific treatment of comics became
academically acceptable. Compared to the Western market,
the production of comics in Africa is negligible, and
therefore its scientific reception almost nonexistent. This
article, however preliminary, for the first time takes
interest in an African comic, specifically the comics in
Swahili, as a subject of its own right. Under the guise of
discussing the question given in the title on two levels, I
intend to present as much material as possible (without
stretching copyrights too far), to give a short
introduction to the theory of the comic, and to raise the
readerþs interest for the Swahili comic. The first level of
discussion focuses on a global perspective. Here I take a
more theoretical stance, concentrating on the comic as a
narrative medium, reflecting its inventory of
representation and questions of reading. My main question
is: What does the Swahili comic do that other comics do as
well? The second level focuses on the local perspective. I
look at the setting in which the comic occurs, i.e.
Swahili- speaking, urban East Africa, and take into
consideration the cultural embedding of the medium: What
can the comic do in East Africa that other media or genres
of cultural expression (music, tv, literature, painting,
theatre, etc.) do not or can not do? What is new about the
comic in East Africa? -- Call no.: PN6790.A34B4 1999a

era la opuesta a la producida en la década cuarenta con
revistas de historietas continuadas y filmes episódicos,

Congress Ramón Columba started the magazine Páginas de
Columba, with a childrens' supplement: Supplemento
Infantil. This supplement became independent, and became
the first Argentinian comics magazine, El Tony, in 1928.
Between the end of the fifties and the beginning of the
next decade, the last magazines carrying continued stories
disappeared, with neither pain nor glory. The transition to
the album format with complete stories from the weeklies
with continued stories coincided with the expansion of

stories. This situation was the opposite of the one in the
forties, with magazines of continued-story comics and
episodic films shown weekly in the cinemas. The comic lost
something with the death of the 'to be continued' stories.
Series conceived for the album format didn't have time for

Several publishers were motivated to publish fumetti due

outlines the cultural, technological and social conditions

Sobre la Historieta, no. 24 (Dic. 2006). -- (Especial
-- "Abstract: While approaching its
centennial, the Argentinean comic has been for several
years about recovering from the deepest crisis in its
history, logical, but not for that reason less abyssal,
consequence of the crisis that shook the country at the
beginning of the new millennium. The collapse of 2001-2002
put an end to a decade of important transition, with its
characteristic phenomena, quests and discoveries. This is
a close look at what happened." -- Abstracts as published
