The Hoodoodad

The Hoodoodad / by Lewis Trondheim ; colored by Brigitte Findakly ; edited and translated by Kim Thompson ; lettering by Jeremy Eaton. -- Seattle, WA : Fantagraphics Books, 1998. -- 48 p. : col. ill. ; 30 cm. -- (The Spiffy Adventures of McConey) -- Translation of: Pichenettes (1996). -- The original series title is Les Formidables Aventures de Lapinot. -- The characters are anthropomorphic animals. -- Call no.: PN6747.T72P513 1998

Summary: McConey and Richie save a bum from committing suicide by accepting a cursed stone. The stone was created by Mi'shgo'sh priests 2,500 years ago in Eastern Svalonia. McConey gets the stone, but it seems like Richie gets the curse. They meet Doug and Paulie and Doug's girlfriend Aline, and spend an evening playing marbles and scrabble. Next day the curse is bothering Richie as they go visit Wilfried, a painter who studies Central European beliefs and who won't let anybody see his paintings because it might interfere with his reincarnation. Things go wrong for Richie as they eat in a restaurant and play pinball. McConey meets Doug at a gallery where a photographer is showing his candid pictures of people on toilets. Richie has gone to get Wilfried, who identifies the stone as the real thing. The day after, Richie and McConey visit an exorcist, who seems to help, but the curse has only left Richie for Wilfried. They go to the European Museum of Arts and Cultures, and the assistant curator recognizes the stone and wants it. He shows them a mummy from the Mi'shgo'sh culture. Before accepting the stone he calls the conservator, who turns out to be the bum who gave them the stone to begin with. The lights go out in the museum. They decide to give the stone to the mummy, and it works. Everything is back to normal.

beats Superman in a bout to determine who could be called
Superman, a grudge match because Moe Ramboe had billed
himself as Superman in the ring before Superman came along.
Moe has a habit of having prophetic dreams, or affective
dreams. His brother, a hood who sees a way to profit from
this one, gathers together the heads of the Metropolis mobs
and introduces Moe as the man who can beat Superman. At the
same time Superman finds that his super-strength ebbs and
flows, sometimes present but at other times embarassingly
absent. Finally he has a compulsion to go to the arena
where Moe is waiting for the fight, which ends as he
dreamed it. Superman recovers for the rematch, finds that
both his strength and invulnerability have returned and Moe
is beaten. He tells Superman about the dreams. -- Call no.:
