Foodboy / Carol Swain. -- Seattle, WA : Fantagraphics Books,
   2004. -- 72 p. : ill. ; 26 cm. -- "Against the starkly
realized backdrop of an overcast mid-Wales with its
rock-ruptured slopes, its immense Victorian dams and
drowned villages, Carol Swain tells the story of Gary, the
Foodboy, and his painful friendship with the heroic, tragic
Ross, a feral outsider living by choice or necessity upon
his world's most frayed, precarious margins. This is a
fierce and touching human story, and for all its
   finely-observed contemporary backdrop of a post-Thatcher
Wales where fragile, vestigial communities cling doggedly
to life around the closed pits in the heartbroken valleys,
the emotions and loyalties here could be palaeolithic, as
old as the weather-chewed landscape. Dark and full of life,
like soil, Foodboy is a little masterpiece, a perfect
example of what modern comics are capable of if they only
try -- Alan Moore." -- Alternative genre. -- Call no.:

A Fool's Gold

A Fool's Gold / Willy Vandersteen ; translated by Nicholas J. Lahey and Mark Conroy. -- San Francisco, Calif. : Hiddigeigei Books, 1977. -- 50 p. : col. ill. ; 26 cm. -- (Willy and Wanda ; 8) -- Originally published in Flemish. -- Adventure story genre. -- Call no.: PN6790.N44W5F6 1977

Summary: Lambik, who in later translations is called Ambrose, is reading about Buffalo Bill when he gets in a struggle with a real horse and a real Indian. A travelling circus with a rodeo has come to Europe. Visiting the grounds, Lambik is offered the job of taming Cyclone, a wild mustang. He is also offered a genuine California gold map by an Indian. Lambik plans to ride the horse and use the prize money to buy the map, and Wanda puts glue on his pants helping him stick on Cyclone. Instead of reward money, however, the circus manager kidnaps Lambik and the whole circus skips town. The Indian tells Willy and Wanda what has happened, and they pursue the circus and find Lambik in the managers's trailer, guarded by a lion. Disguised as lions, Willy and Wanda make the manager pay up and let Lambik go. The Indian gets his money, and Lambik gets his map. Lambik is so excited he leaves for California without the map, and Willy and Wanda follow with it. Once in the desert, Wanda finds some quicksand and fishes Lambik out of it, and while they're reviving him all their gear, including Wanda's doll Sawdust, is stolen. An Indian, Chief Gold Water, comes along and offers them shelter until Lambik is better. Wanda soon sees the Gold Water trying to destroy Sawdust, and before he can do it Sawdust is snatched by a buzzard. Out of remorse the Chief tells Wanda that Lambik's map is real, though noone has ever returned after finding the mine. The mine is guarded by a tribe called the Goldbugs. The buzzard drops Sawdust in Goldbug territory, and they place the doll at the top of their totem pole. The three Europeans advance into Goldbug country and Lambik is soon captured. Willy and Wanda fight with the masked chief of the Goldbugs, and are saved by a buffalo stampede. Lambik is first almost burned at the stake, then given to the oldest woman in the tribe, Miss Golden Delicious, for a husband. Willy and Wanda read the smoke-signal wedding announcement. They come upon a ghost town and a sourdough named Freddy, with a locomotive, who helps them ride to the rescue. The wedding is broken up, but the Goldbug warriors surround the train when it runs out of steam. Eluding the Indians, Lambik still won't leave without his gold. After a struggle in a river, Lambik is shot in the head by an arrow, and fished out of the river by a talking bear. They make it to a pile of nuggets guarded by a talking totem pole, which lectures them on the evils of greed. The totem pole has enlarged and animated Wanda's doll, Sawdust, to be a "cruel and thoughtless spirit," i.e., the mysterious masked chief. Sawdust starts a prairie fire to stop Wanda and Willy from escaping. The talking bear saves them. Next Lambik, Willy and Wanda are all buried in nuggets by an earthquake ordered by the totem pole. The bear dynamites the totem pole, which breaks the spell on Sawdust and frees the friends from the golden avalanche. The bear turns out to be Aunt Sidonia in disguise, and they all fly back to the low countries in their helicopter. Except for Golden Delicious and Freddy Sourdough, who get married and steam away for a honeymoon on their locomotive.
