Chapter 1: "The Lodge of Hermes" p. 16-31. -- Summary: While pretending to escape pursuers, Corto Maltese falls through the ceiling of a Masonic Temple during a meeting, and is soon friendly with one of the masons, named Bepi Faliero. Corto is looking for an emerald, a "clavicle of Solomon," that has been missing for 1,000 years or so. Bepi gets Corto invited to a meeting at the home of a woman named Hipazia, a kind of social and intellectual leader of Venice, and there gets some suggestions for his quest. Chapter 2: "The Baron Corvo Enigma" p. 32-45. -- Summary: Baron Corvo, a British writer who died in 1913, sent Corto Maltese a riddle before he died. The riddle leads to runic writing carved in an ancient Greek stone lion, and to Arabic writing on a funeral stone that is supposed to date from before Arabic writing. Trying to get a look at Baron Corvo's diaries, Corto Maltese gets involved in a gunfight. Chapter 3: "The Stairway of Encounters" p. 46-60. -- Summary: Corto is grazed by a bullet and falls from a roof. He is unconscious for three days, and has wild dreams. Upon his recovery, he goes back to the masons for more discussion of his quest and to warn them that one of their number may be working against them. Chapter 4: "The Revelations of Saint Mark" p. 62-75. -- Summary: Bepi Faliero, wearing his masonic robes, tries to kill Corto Maltese. Bepi dies in the encounter but before he dies he reveals that he was also searching for the emerald. Having figured out where it should be, Corto finds only a letter from Baron Corvo in the hiding place. Soon most of the characters are dead, but Corto reunites them in a dream-like sequence in which he finds the emerald in his own pocket. He then knocks at a door and asks to leave the story and get into another one somewhere else. This summary is from European Comics in English

Yet, when Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa weaves them into a story, they make us laugh and alert us to our own weaknesses, setting us firmly on the road to being better human beings." -- Contents: "The Pandit and the Milkmaid" p. 1-6 ; "The Cobra and the Monk" p. 7-12 ; "The Great Saint" p. 13-17 ; "The Seven Jars of Gold" p. 18-25 ; "The Man Who Wanted to Dig a Well" p. 26-28 ; "The Rich Man's Feasts" p. 29-30 -- Call no. Is truth more precious than wealth? Answers to such questions came easily to Aushadha Kumar, a Bodhisattva at the court of King Vaideha. A previous incarnation of the wise and compassionate Gautama Buddha, the tale of his life amidst adversity and courtly rivalry defines the Buddhist ideal of right thinking and right living. This priceless gem from the Jataka fables teaches even as it entertains." -- Call no.: PN6790 .I54A5no.672 ----------------------------------------------------- Fables & Humour. His weapons, single-minded courage and an unfailing charm, seem puny against the spells of a powerful magician. All the same, the wise young lad's mission is brilliantly successful and he also finds he can cast a few useful spells of his own. An adaptation of a popular folktale from Andhra Pradesh." -- Call no.: PN6790 .I54A5no.743 ----------------------------------------------------- Fables & Humour. Light-hearted lessons in morality, these tales keep us chuckling as lies, greed and hypocrisy take a severe beating. The very common, very human lust for a gleaming necklace, or a tasty meal, or ever more riches has never seemed quite so foolish." -- Contents: "The Queen's Necklace" p. 1-15 ; "The Greedy Fisherman" p. 16-22 ; "The Greedy Hawker" p. 23-30 -- Call no.: PN6790 .I54A5no.714 ----------------------------------------------------- Fables & Humour. Soon he realised that, if young Raman was around, it was best to expect the unexpected. This village bumpkin was no fool, even the fiery goddess Kali had given in to his wiles. Wheedling his way into the mighty Vijayanagara court, it was but a short step into the heart of King Krishnadeva Raya, who welcomed a laugh or two to lighten his busy day." -- Call no.: PN6790 .I54A5no.523 ----------------------------------------------------- Fables & Humour. After all, he humbled great kings as well as learned scholars. Wiggling out of every predicament in unique and unexpected ways, this poet-jester reminds us of Birbal at the court of Akbar. More importantly, would he win the fair Vasanti as his wife? But who would be his witness? According to legend, a miracle occurred. The innocence of the penniless young orphan was declared. He would choose as his minister the man who could keep a ram for one month without allowing it to lose or gain any weight. Jinadatta was a man who followed instructions blindly and found himself struggling with losses. These two characters feature in the two tales taken from Jain texts written in the 10th and 14th centuries." -- Contents: "Shrenik" p. 1-15, 19-20 ; "The Hidden Truth" p. 21-32 -- Call no.: PN6790 .I54A5no.730 ----------------------------------------------------- Fables & Humour. Had they understood the joy of giving and sharing, how much happier they, and their families, would have been! Buddha's most important message, that desire and greed block the path to eternal bliss, is reiterated in the Jataka tales. They also present a quirky view of a world where idleness is an art, a devious mind a cherished talent, and humour the ultimate virtue. As animals pit their might against men and women, we are assured, happily, that the brain is mightier than mere brawn." -- Contents: "The Tiger-Eater" p. 1-9 ; "The Bear Comes to Dinner" p. 10-30 -- Call no.: PN6790 .I54A5no.707 ----------------------------------------------------- Fables & Humour. The wise, like Nigrodha Kumar, cherish their companions. Pottik's selfless loyalty is rewarded by unexpected riches. On the other hand, for the selfish ingrate Shakha there awaits only a shameful loneliness. Rich or poor, ugly or handsome, powerful or helpless, a friend is one whom you can trust. And for this luxury, you should repay your friend with respect and honour." -- Contents: "True Friends" p. 1-19 ; "Kanni, the Unlucky" p. 20-26 ; "A Monk in Need is a Friend Indeed" p. 27-29 -- Call no.: PN6790 .I54A5no.614 ----------------------------------------------------- Fables & Humour. The goddess Parvati herself embellished it with her thirty-two beautiful companions, whom she first cast into stone.
