SUMMARY: New York, 1940. Reporter Virginia Mueller gets an
assignment to do a story on the Blackhawks. Wu Cheng
(Chop-Chop), who has been living in his home village in
China, sends a distress call to the Blackhawks. A huge
mechanical dragon is being used by the Japanese to
devastate the village and intimidate the superstitious
villagers. Ginny Mueller and the Blackhawks meet in the
deserted village, and find Wu Cheng's diary. It describes
the building of the dragon, with American aid, and Wu
Cheng's efforts to stop it. Imprisoned by the Japanese, Wu
Cheng learns that the Japanese attacked his village
specifically to lure the Blackhawks there, as part of a
bargain with Germany. Ginny's presence as a witness was
also arranged by the Japanese. Wu Cheng gets free in time
to reveal the set-up and save the day. He re-joins the

Diary of a Teenage Girl--Miscellanea.
Icon, Representation and Virtuality in Reading the Graphic
   Narrative / by David Steiling. -- 291 leaves : ill. ; 28
cm. -- Thesis (Ph.D.) University of South Florida.
Department of English, 2006. -- Includes bibliographical
references (leaves 280-284). -- Abstract (used with
   permission): "Icon," "representation," and "virtuality,"
are key elements to consider when reading multi-modal
narratives, including graphic narratives. By considering in
detail how these elements are realized in various examples,
the author shows how the study of the comics can lay
groundwork for critical reading across the technological
continuum of storytelling. The author looks at how icon,
representation, and virtuality interact in a reading of
William Hogarth's A Harlot's Progress. He then examines
each term in more detail through readings of a variety of
graphic narratives including Max Ernst's Une Semaine de
Bonte, Winsor McCay's Little Nemo in Slumberland, Kurt
Vonnegut's Breakfast of Champions, Craig Thompson's
Blankets, Phoebe Gloeckner's Diary of a Teenage Girl, and
Posy Simmonds's Gemma Bovery. The author distinguishes
between two types of virtuality, internal and external, and
ties the construction of virtuality to reader response
theory. In exploring issues related to the icon, the author
builds on Scott McCloud's conjecture that the iconic
character is the means through which the reader inhabits
the virtual space of the graphic story. The author advances
the proposition that icons are metonymies and that graphic
narratives are centered in metonymic, not metaphoric
devices. He also undertakes a discussion of how icon
operates within the expanding tradition of the "illustrated
novel." Throughout the dissertation an attempt is made to
express observation and analysis through continuous instead
of binary descriptors in order to emphasize the cooperative
rather than oppositional arrangements of word and image
within the graphic narrative. The dissertation concludes
with an extended examination of Will Eisner's contention
that the use of stereotype is a necessity in graphic
storytelling. Examples from Frederik Strömberg's Black
Images in the Comics are used to test this theory and
illustrate its consequences. The treatise finishes with an
analysis of approaches to representation that avoid
stereotypical treatment, are inclusive but sufficiently
flexible to operate through caricature. These observations
are applied to issues of characterization and
representation in electronic gaming narrative. The author
concludes that ethics, effectiveness, reputation and
empathy are all compromised when artists resort to
   stereotypes. -- Call no.: PN6725.S7515 2006

Díaz Castro, Cristian Eric.
"La Historieta en Chile" / Cristian Eric Díaz Castro. p.
75-92 in Revista Latinoamericana de Estudios sobre la
   Historieta, v. 2, no. 6 (Junio 2002).
-- Summary: As of
the beginning of the 21st century, graphic storytelling has
gained a place in literature. Telling stories with
complementary images and text is established as a real art.
However, this form isn't getting appropriate attention in
all countries, in this case Chile. There this craft has
developed slowly but constantly during the 20th century,
very influenced by the European style in the beginning, the
North American style since the fifties, and the Japanese
way in recent years, all subject to then current technical
developments. To understand the Chilean non-presence in the
world's history of comic books, it must be said: There are
   few serious works about the history of Chilean comic books;
   those books or essays only name a few authors and titles;
they appear rarely ; and only a few can get their hands on
these historic appreciations. This research aims to rescue
and recover this patrimony, and show the world the Chilean
idiom in ink and paper. So, hang on because the time trip
is beginning!" -- Abstracts as printed with the article,

153-176 in Revista Latinoamericana de Estudios sobre la
   Historieta, v. 2, no. 7 (Sept. 2002). -- Covers the period
-- Summary:
"In this period foreign comic strips were setting the
pattern for Chilean comic book production and the use of
the balloon in panels is hesitantly accepted. The drawing
style is classic, monotonous and of many levels of quality,
but some cartoonists try new ways and some names stand out,
like Jorge Delano, Christie, Core, Percy, Nato, Alhue, and
Pepo. This period of time begins with the arrival of weekly
comics magazines like Don Fausto and goes up to the golden
age of El Peneca and Topaze and their imitations. This era
ends with the publication of the most famous Chilean comic
book character: Condorito." -- Abstracts as published with

   Historieta, v. 2, no. 8 (Dic. 2002). -- Covers the years
1950 to 1965.
-- Abstract: During
these years the challenge for Chilean comic books is to
change, or disappear from the newsstands. Former big guns
disappear despite the publishers' efforts. Only the
geniuses will survive the times, and this thanks to the
power of satire. Technological improvements bring changes
in publishing. The Zig-Zag publishing house understands the
changing times and the tastes of the readers. This is how
the preamble to the golden age of the Chilean comic book
begins. -- Abstracts as printed with the article, with some
