Cicciolina

Cicciolina / Filippucci, Romanini, Ubaldi. -- Cha Cha Comics, 1990. -- 47 p. : ill. ; 30 cm. -- "Adults only." -- Translated from the Italian by Detlef Goebler. -- Erotic genre. -- Call no.: PN6767.F5C5 1990

Summary: Born Ilona Staller in Hungary, "Cicciolina" became a talk radio hostess and X-rated movie star in Italy and was elected to the Italian House of Representatives in 1987, according to the write-up on the back cover of the English edition of this comic book. The story begins with Cupid changing himself into a teddy bear, and being stuck on Earth with a young Ilona. When she grows up, she hitchhikes to Copenhagen, is soon confronted with potential violence between two gangs, and discovers a talent for peacemaking through the initiation of sex orgies. In a few years Ilona has changed her name to Cicciolina and moved to Italy. A conservative group called the National Female Front for Morality (NFFM) is concerned about Cicciolina's radio show that is interfering with their plans to lower the collective European libido. The NFFM attaches a new machine, called the Moral Turbator, to the broadcast media, and Cicciolina's language on the radio becomes denatured. Even her appearances on television are provided with modest clothing by the Turbator. Cicciolina and a friend sneak into the building where the Moral Turbator is working, and make it witness live sex acts until it explodes with the overload. Knowing that this is not a permanent solution, they travel to Russia to visit a scientist friend. By coincidence, he's the same man who invented the Moral Turbator, and he helps them prevent NFFM agents from getting the plans, since he doesn't want to build another one.

Cigars of the Pharaoh

Cigars of the Pharaoh / Hergé ; translated by Leslie Lonsdale-Cooper and Michael Turner. -- Boston : Joy Street Books, 1983. -- 62 p. : col. ill. ; 30 cm. -- (The Adventures of Tintin) -- Translation of: Les Cigares du Pharaon. -- Call no.: PN6747.H4T52213 1983

Summary: Tintin and Snowy are on a Mediterranean cruise, and as the story opens the next stop is Port Said. On board they meet Dr. Sophocles Sarcophagus, who has a papyrus with the location of a tomb that Egyptologists have been trying to find, the tomb of Pharaoh Kih-Oskh. He invites Tintin to join him at Port Said on a trip to Cairo and the spot shown on his map. They also meet Rastapopoulous, an irascible film tycoon. Next morning, Thompson and Thomson arrest Tintin on a narcotics frame-up. Tintin escapes from imprisonment in the ship's hold, and meets Sarcophagus in Port Said. While Sarcophagus is digging for the tomb, Snowy finds a cigar in the sand with the emblem of Kih-Oskh on the cigar band. Sarcophagus disappears, and then the tomb opens so Tintin and Snowy go inside. There they find mummies of 19 earlier Egyptologists, and cases of cigars. Knocked out by gas, Sarcophagus, Tintin and Snowy are placed in coffins and mistakenly given to smugglers, who dump them overboard when the coast guard boards their ship. Adrift in the Red Sea, Tintin and Snowy are separated from Sarcophagus and surrounded by sharks. Sarcophagus is "rescued" by the smugglers. Tintin and Snowy are picked up by the captain of a dhow, whose other passenger is a salesman from Lisbon who sets up a "solo supermarket" to sell civilization to the Arabs. Tintin is captured by Patrash Pasha, who resents the salesman, but who has been reading Tintin albums for years. The Pasha gives Tintin a horse, and Tintin rescues a blonde woman being beaten by Arab brutes. It turns out he has interruped a movie scene being shot by Rastapopoulos, who is making an "Arabian Knights" film. Returning to the dhow, Tintin discovers that it is a gun-runner. The captain ties him up and flees as the boat is boarded by Thomson and Thompson, now assigned to stop the gun traffic. The police desert the dhow when they think it's going to explode, and Tintin and Snowy return to Rastapopoulos and the film crew. On foot in the desert, ambushers shoot Tintin's water bottle, then he and Snowy are fooled by a mirage. They come across Thompson and Thomson disguised as Bedouins, and escape to a city. In the city Tintin is drafted into the army, and while cleaning an office, shoops and finds more cigars with the Pharaoh's symbol on them. Tintin is sentenced to a firing squad for spying, and rescued by Thomson and Thompson. Soldiers uncover the plot, Thompson and Thomson flee, and Tintin steals an airplane. After avoiding pursuit by two other planes Tintin runs out of fuel over a jungle in India. In the jungle, Tintin cures an elephant with quinine, is befriended by the herd, and learns their language. He also finds Sarcophagus in the jungle, who has apparently gone mad and is painting the Pharoah's symbol on trees. Tintin gets him to a colonial settlement, but before he can be taken to a hospital Sarcophagus steals a Hindu dagger called a Kukri and vanishes into the night. Tintin catches him next morning, in the power of a hypnotist fakir who also hypnotizes Tintin. Sarcophagus breaks the trance by shooting Tintin's gun and they trace the trouble to a poet named Zloty, who gets drugged with Rajaijah juice, the "poison of madness" before he can reveal who is boss is. Now Tintin has two madmen to take to the hospital, but when he gets there, due to a substitution of the doctor's letter, Tintin is locked up and the poet and Egyptologist are set free. Tintin escapes and hops a moving train, leaving Snowy behind. Thomson and Thompson are on the train, and Tintin eludes them. Meanwhile Snowy has attacked a sacred cow and gotten himself tied to the altar of Siva, about to be slain. Tintin makes it to the next train station where police, alerted by the superintendent of the hospital, are waiting for him. He drops banana peels to trip them, but they use the same technique to catch him. The ambulance back to the hospital collides with the two madmen, and Tintin escapes in his strait-jacket, only to step in a tiger trap. Meanwhile, Snowy escapes execution as Thompson (or Thomson) speaks mysteriously from behind the alter of Siva. The owner of the tiger trap, the Maharaja of Gaipajama, has just extricated Tintin when his howdah is attacked by a tiger. Tintin wrestles the tiger into the strait jacket and wins the favor of the Maharajah. He learns that drug traffickers are forcing people to grow opium poppies, and suspects that the Maharajah's father and brother were driven mad by the same fakir's Rajaijah juice that was used on the poet Zloty. Indeed, that night the fakir climbs his magic rope and shoots a dart at the Mahrajah. Tintin waits to apprehend him, but he escapes into an underground complex where a hooded conspiracy is meeting. Knocking them all out, Tintin uncovers the faces of the "jungle Ku-Klux Klan." Thomson and Thompson arrive and explain that this gang of drug smugglers had been using the Pharaoh's tomb as a hideout. Then the crown prince is kidnapped and after a car chase in the mountains Tintin rescues him singlehandedly. In the end they discover that the cigars of the Pharoah are filled with opium. Tintin decides to stay and rest for a few days.
