The Broken Ear

The Broken Ear / Hergé ; translated by Leslie Lonsdale-Cooper and Michael Turner. -- Boston : Little, Brown, 1978. -- 62 p. : col. ill. ; 30 cm. -- (The Adventures of Tintin) -- Translation of L'Oreille Cassée. -- (An Atlantic Monthly Press Book) -- Summary: Determined to recover an Indian fetish stolen from the Museum of Ethnography, Tintin and Snowy follow a curious trail that leads to South America, revolution, and hostile jungle Indians. -- Spine title: Tintin and the Broken Ear. -- Call no.: PN6747.H4T52413 1978

Summary: An Arumbaya fetish from the banks of the River Coliflor has been stolen from the Museum of Ethnology, and returned the next day. Only Tintin notices that the returned fetish is a fake, as the right ear of the original was damaged and the replacement's ear is intact. Next a sculptor named Balthazar, who is famous for primitive style wooden statuettes is found dead, survived by his parrot. By the time Tintin thinks of interviewing the parrot, a man with a Spanish accent has taken it. When the parrot escapes he lies to Tintin, saying it was a gift from his grandfather. Both Tintin and the mystery man advertise in the newspaper for a lost parrot. A man brings the parrot to Tintin, but it escapes before he can get a cage. That night the man with the Spanish accent breaks into his apartment looking for the parrot, and Tintin is narrowly missed by a thrown knife. The parrot returns to the sculptor's apartment. Again the mystery man gets there first, and while leaving with the parrot tries to run Tintin down with his car. A witness gets the license plate number. The car belongs to one Alonso Perez, and at the address Tintin finds the mystery man, Ramón Bada, practicing his knife-throwing while the parrot jeers. Tintin overhears the parrot say that Rodrigo Tortilla killed Balthazar. Alonso and Ramón board a ship that Tortilla is taking back to South America. The two crooks beat up Tortilla, and Tintin in blackface disguise catches them and turns them over to the army on their arrival in San Theodoro. A fetish that was in Tortilla's possession turns out to be another fake. Tintin is invited ashore to assist in the interrogation, and brings the fake fetish in a suitcase. His suitcase is switched for another containing bombs, and Tintin is arrested for terrorism and put before a firing squad. The government changes twice while the soldiers try to perform the execution, and Tintin ends up alive but drunk, and appointed a colonel, aide-de-camp to General Alcazar. Next morning Tintin reports for work as aide-de-camp and plays chess with the general, and saves the general from a bomb thrown in the window. Later he is kidnapped by Alonso and Ramón, who want to know why the fetish in the suitcase was a fake. He is rescued by a bolt of lightning which knocks him out of the kidnappers' cabin. Next morning Tintin beats General Alcazar at chess, and Alcazar shoots him with blanks for a joke. A bomb attack then gives the general a case of jaundice, and Tintin minds the office. R. W. Trickler, an American oil man, tries to bribe Tintin to influence the general to start a war to consolidate an oilfield. Tintin refuses and Trickler hires Pablo to kill him. Ramón tries to kill Tintin at the same time, and the two assassins defeat each other's attempts. Pablo explains and Tintin spares his life. In a few days the general is back at work and Trickler convinces him to start the war against Nuevo-Rico, at the same time warning him not to trust Tintin. Next comes Basil Bazarov of "Korrupt Arms Gmbh," who sells guns to both sides and helps Trickler convince Alcazar that Tintin is a spy. Tintin is again imprisoned, but Pablo rescues him by pulling out the bars with a farm tractor. A car chase follows, and Tintin's car goes off a cliff. The soldiers are tricked out of their car to inspect the wreck, and Tintin takes their car. At the border the soldiers' car creates an international incident, and the war begins. Tintin escapes while being taken to the capital of Nuevo-Rico and he and Snowy are almost swept over a waterfall on the Coliflor River. Tintin hires a guide to take him and Snowy to Arumbaya, the village whose fetish was stolen at the beginning of the story. The guide deserts them, and they find a British explorer named Ridgewell living with the Arumbayas. The Arumbayan language is a funny kind of phonetic English. Ridgewell is teaching the Arumbaya kids to play golf. Ridgewell and Tintin are captured by the Rumbabas, enemies of the Arumbayas. Snowy goes for help, but the Arumbaya witch doctor interferes and prepares to cut out Snowy's heart for medicinal purposes. Meanwhile Ridgewell turns out to be a ventriloquist and has a Rumbaba totem pole order the release of Tintin and himself. They rescue Snowy, and the chief explains that the fetish was given as a gift to an earlier explorer, but that a magic stone was stolen by his interpreter, Lopez. Tintin figures the diamond must be hidden in the original statuette. On his way back down the river Tintin meets Alonso and Ramón, who take his canoe and try to feed him to the piranhas. Tintin and Snowy walk out of the jungle and take a ship back to Europe. In Europe, he finds the antique shops are full of fetishes with broken ears, and it turns out the sculptor had kept the original and his brother is mass-producing copies. The original was bought by an American named Goldbarr, who has left by ship for America. Tintin catches the ship by taking the mail plane. On the ship, Tintin, Alonso and Ramón struggle over the fetish, which breaks. The diamond falls into the sea, and so do Tintin and the two men. Only Tintin comes back up. The other two are taken away by little winged creatures with horns and pitchforks. Goldbarr asks Tintin to return the fetish to the museum, where it is repaired and put back on display.

into Axonville, and the town appears deserted. The men of
the town are waiting in ambush, however, and Giddap soon
has a noose around his neck and is headed for a lynching.
Then a little girl, Julie Copping, cries out that Joe is
her friend, and the townspeople relent. They had thought
that Joe was part of a gang chasing Jim and Rose Copping,
Julie's parents. Julie gives Joe the map to her father's
gold strike. Joe decides he'd better go help his old friend
Jim, so he thanks the townspeople for the loan of the
necktie, takes it off, and prepares to leave. Before he can
start, Lou Marks knocks him down and steals the map. In
flashback, we learn that after Copping found the gold, the
crooked sheriff of the town of Garriot has tried to steal
his claim. Copping had shot "sheriff" Kaye in the arm, and
Copping had spent three years in jail for it. Upon his
release, Kaye was waiting with to cronies to continue the
pursuit of Copping's gold. In the present, Loe Marks
volunteers to join Giddap Joe as he rides out to find the
Coppings. Marks is sure that Joe didn't see him when he
stole the map. In the mountains, Rose Copping's horse is
frightened by a rattlesnake, and she falls to the ground
and is threatened by the snake. She wants Jim to shoot the
snake, but he is sure that the sound of the shot would
bring Kaye and his men straight to them. He lassos the
snake neatly around its "neck" and throws it aside. Rose's
horse's leg is broken, and Jim won't shoot it for the same
reason, but Rose shoots it out of compassion. Sure enough,
the couple is captured in a trice and threats to Rose soon
elicit another map from Jim. At the entry to the cave where
the gold is, Kaye stops and sends one of his men in to
check the truth of Copping's story. The man doesn't come
out, so Kaye sends another man in. Giddap Joe and Lou Marks
(Lou having had a change of heart) were waiting inside the
cave and have overpowered the two men. Joe then steps out
of the cave and arrests Kaye. -- Call no.:

Summary: A year has passed since the assassination attempts on President Grant. A trading post near Fort Bowie, Arizona, is selling guns and bad liquor to the Indians illegally, in collusion with an Indian agent who enjoys shooting Indians. Apaches under the command of Tsi-Na-Pah take over a stagecoach to enter the post and exact payment for the defective and dangerous things they've been sold. It is a bloodless action, but they make the agent drink some of the liquor he's helped sell, and he soon dies from it. Orders come to the army to catch and hang the Apaches who did it. One of the passengers on the stage was Wild Bill Hickok, and he figures out that since Tsi-Na-Pah means "broken nose" in Apache, he must have found Michael Blueberry. At the Apache camp, Blueberry is war chief under an aging Cochise, and is in competition with brash young Victorio for the hand of Cochise's daughter, Chini. Both promise her gifts: Blueberry will bring her eagle feathers, and Victorio will bring her a white woman's dress and a watch. Blueberry climbs to catch his eagle, while Victorio sneaks into Fort Bowie to steal his gifts. The eagle is caught, and so is Victorio. Hickok has hired a tracker, Jed Shrieber, and his dogs, so they let Victorio go. Victorio goes straight to the hidden Apache camp, but instead of a dress he brings Chini a pistol. Blueberry brings her a dead eagle, smelly after a few days on the trail, and Chini is about equally displeased with her suitors. The soldiers surround the camp, high on a cliff, in the night. Blueberry wins the argument to lower everybody by ropes and head for Mexico rather than fighting, and Victorio is bitter about it. The Apaches kill their own horses, steal the soldiers' horses, and head out. Cochise suffers heatstroke, and while he's unconscious Victorio gets himself elected acting chief. He ties Blueberry upside down in a tree and heads to the almost undefended fort to get revenge. Cochise wakes and tells Chini to go find Blueberry. Chini and Schrieber find Blueberry at the same time and exchange shots, but Chini's pistol has blanks and she is badly wounded. Blueberry convinces Shrieber to warn the solders now slowly walking home, and goes himself to the fort to manage a defense against Victorio. After the soldiers arrive, Blueberry is arrested but sends a doctor out for Chini.
