The Beast is DeadThe Beast is Dead : II World War Among the Animals / Dancette, Calvo. -- Abi Melzer Productions, 1984. -- 92 p. : col. ill. ; 31 cm. -- Translation of: La Bête est Morte. -- About World War II. -- War and Funny animal genres. -- Call no.: PN6747.D35B413 1984Summary: This album has the aspect of a children's book in funny animal format. Although it is in panel-and-caption style and has "cute" characters, this is a work directed to grown-up children. It details the tragedies and triumphs of World War II from a French perspective. At this remove (it originally appeared in two albums in 1944 and 1945), and based on headlines and stereotypes of its time, many of the allusions are difficult. The French, who are mainly squirrels, rabbits and storks, suffer at the hands of the wolves (Germans) and are saved by the tenacity of the dogs (British) and the might of the buffaloes (Americans). The Italians are hyenas, and the Japanese are monkeys. The Jews are rabbits, but are hardly mentioned, though the introduction to this edition helps the reader know where to look for them. For the 21st century reader, some details of the course of the war may now be lost in the allegorical language, but they were not the purpose of the work to begin with. The message, delivered without sparing any unambiguity, is this: Germans are bad. Don't trust them. This summary is from European Comics in English
Translation (Jefferson, NC : McFarland & Company, 2002).

Though Dante believes that the Kraken is only an immortal and troublesome beast, the Church suspects that it is actually Satan himself. In the bunker are a radar station, to watch for the Kraken, and a pulpit, so the exorcist can preach to it. Dante, with some of his men, and the priest's obnoxious assistant are also locked in for the duration. After nine hours of impassioned preaching the Kraken arrives, and the priest seems to die. After hitting the bunker a few times the Kraken leaves. The priest then comes alive again, and is shot by his assistant who thinks the priest is now possessed. The priest, dying once more, says that the assistant is the one who is possessed. -- Call no.: PN6777.S45K7 1984 ----------------------------------------------------- Beasts.
