Pirates

The album L'Île de l'Homme Morte is part of the Barbe-Rouge series, pitting pirate against pirate from Britain's shore to Tierra del Fuego. By contrast the pirate Laffite in the Cotton Kid album Charivari dans les Bayous is long dead and has left clues to the location of his treasure for the current generation to struggle over. The future has pirates as well, and in the first volume of Argon the Savage our heroes are beset by space pirates.

"Pirates!" / Evariste Blanchet. p. 100-105 in 9e Art : Les
-- English summary (from p.
151): "Pirates! If Barbe-Rouge by Charler and Hubinon
represents the classic reference for pirate stories in
French-Belgian comics, it is interesting to compare it, as
Evariste Blanchet does, with recent creations such as
Petrus Barbygère (by Sfar and Dubois), Kaarib (by Calvi and
Krassinsky), and of course the startling Isaac the Pirate
(by Christopher Blain), which is full of surprising
characters, among which stands out that of Alice, a

Translation of Île aux Cent Mille Morts. -- Summary (from
publisher's web site via SkyRiver): "Five years ago, little
Gwenny's father found, inside a bottle, a map with
instructions on how to reach the mysterious Isle of 100,000
Graves and its legendary treasures-- and then he vanished.
Now Gwenny, having stumbled across another bottle-shipped
map, enlists the dubious help of a shipful of pirates, sets
out to find the island, and her long-lost dad. Little does
she realize that the Isle comes by its ominous name
honestly, as the location of a secret school for
executioners and torturers, where apple-cheeked youngsters
are taught the finer points of extracting information from
prisoners-- and then putting an end to their lives in a
wide variety of gruesome ways. And they've reached the
point in their studies where theory should ideally give way
to practice, so an influx of uninvited visitors comes as a
blessing to the faculty. And yes, this story is a comedy,

   p. in Real Life Comics, no. 58 (Oct. 1951). -- About a
French pirate in the 17th century (1679-1687). -- Summary
(by Kristine Baclawski): In 1679, French nobleman Raveneau
de Lussan lost his chateau and wealth. He made his way to
the port city Dieppe, where he was forced into becoming a
privateer for Louis XIV of France. Louis' plan was to
disrupt Spanish shipping in the Carribean Sea and Pacific
Ocean. De Lussan was not inclined to be a typical pirate,
and he took only gold and cargo from ships and towns,
avoiding the taking of lives. His reputation as a gentleman
pirate spread widely, enabling his missions to be
profitable without being deadly. With the changing
political climate in France, he was able to turn over his
command and return home, a wealthy but troubled man. Taking
advice from a priest, he put his deeds into a written

finissent pas de voguer dans notre imaginaire. Des pirates
de tout sort, de toute époque et de tout lieu ont également
sillonné la bande dessinée." -- English summary (from p.
(by Christopher Blain), which is full of surprising
characters, among which stands out that of Alice, a
magnificent portrait of a woman." -- Call no.: folio

Flies ; 1) -- Translation of Le Roi des Mouches 1:
Hallorave. -- Summary (from publisher's website via
SkyRiver): "Set in a suburb that is both nowhere and
everywhere, King of the Flies is a glorious bastard,
combining the intricacy and subtlety of the best European
graphic novels with a hyperdetailed, controlled noir style
derived from the finest American cartoonists. Mezzo and
Pirus, previously best known in Europe for a series of
cynical, brutal gangster stories, have abandoned their guns
and gals for this cycle of suburban stories, but in King of
the Flies the violence has just (for the most part) been
interiorized. King of the Flies first appears to be a
series of unrelated short stories, each starring (and
narrated by) a different protagonist, but it soon becomes
obvious that these seemingly disparate episodes weave
together to form a single complex narrative, with events
that are only glimpsed (or even referred to) revisited from
different perspectives revolving around Eric, a
ne'er-do-well, drug-taking teenager at war with his
stepfather and, apparently, the whole world. (He is the
titular King.)" -- Alternative genre. -- Call no.:
