Johnny Freak

Johnny Freak / script, Mauro Marcheselli & Tiziano Sclavi ; art, Andrea Venturi ; translation, Hazim Kazic ; dialogue, Reed Chaval. -- Milwaukie, OR : Dark Horse Comics, 1999. -- 100 p. : ill. ; 21 cm. -- (Dylan Dog ; 2) -- Call no.: PN6768.P913 1999

Summary: A boy without legs is locked in a basement room, and we see that he has excellent drawing skills. The building burns down and he barely escapes. He is found in a graveyard, by a pack of dogs. The dogs run and get Dylan Dog, and Dylan takes him to a hospital. The doctors say he was born deaf and dumb, but otherwise normal, and that his legs, one kidney and one lung were deliberately amputated. Dylan names him "Johnny," and wonders where he came from. Next we see the elderly lady who feeds the dogs. She and the dogs are being beaten up by a gang of rich boys when Dylan Dog interferes. Dylan visits Johnny in the hospital and discovers that he is an excellent clarinet player as well as an artist. Johnny draws on the walls of the hospital room, and his nurse, Dora is very nice and impressed with him. Dora helps Dylan try and find out about Johnny's past. A man asks Dylan if he has a dog, and Dylan says, "No! I am a dog!" and barks and growls at him. Dora thinks he's pretty funny. Dylan falls for Dora, but she already has a fiancé. Dylan goes back to the graveyard where he found Johnny, and is himself attacked by the gang of punks. He wounds one of them with Felix's gun, which he was carrying by accident. Visiting with Johnny, Dylan finds out that Johnny is also jealous of the fiancé, when the press corps bursts in. That night a phony surgeon tries to give Johnny a lethal injection, and Dora interferes. Johnny seems to know the attacker, and draws a picture of him. For safety, Johnny moves in with Dylan and Felix. Johnny laughs at Felix's jokes. Dora is picked up for the evening by her fiancé, and she finds he has a bullet wound. She figures out that he's the one who tried to beat up Dylan and she tells him to go away. Dylan happens along and chases him away. She moves in with Dylan, at least for the night, and Johnny approves. Next day the newspaper article brings Johnny's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arkham, who claim him and take him away. In the car they talk about their plans to kill him, as though he weren't even there. Dylan soon discovers that the Arkham house recently burned down, and that the dog beater-former fiancé's name is Dougal Arkham. It turns out that Johnny's parents, both physicians, had been keeping him in the basement as spare body parts for Dougal. Dougal's body has been deteriorating since birth, and he now needs a heart transplant. Johnny escapes, the police raid the Arkham house, and Dougal and Dylan both find Johnny in the graveyard. Dougal has a gun, and shoots Johnny, then has a heart attack. Johnny's dying wish is that his heart be transplanted to save Dougal's life.
