Summary: Wanda and Willy are camping in the
country when a storm takes their tents, and they find shelter
in a barn. In the barn they encounter a tiny man, about the
size of Wanda's doll Sawdust, who keeps running around shouting
"Badapel." They discover that everyone in the region is
frightened to talk about "Badapel." Back home, Aunt Sidonia
doesn't know what to make of their story. Professor Barabas has
given the kids a gift of a new car, called a Vitamini, that
runs on human food rather than on gasoline. They visit the
professor to thank him, and he tells them about his new
discovery, which uses zinc atoms to create a ray that shrinks
things. Unfortunately, his former assistant has stolen the
formula, and his name is Badapel. With this clue, Willy and
Wanda hurry back to their former campsite, only to find that
the place they stayed in is gone, and that a tree is spying on
them. They find the farmstead under a bucket, and inside the
hollow tree they find a man named Lambik, claiming to be a
termite inspector. Wanda and Willy are soon tied up in a
windmill death trap by Badapel, but are saved by their car.
Following Badapel, they run into Lambik again, who introduces
himself this time as a "plumber-detective," hired by the
professor. The three of them trail Badapel using news reports
of shrinking things, and eventually find him building a
miniature village to rule over. The shrinking effect is
temporary and has to be renewed, so Badapel's plan of shrinking
everybody in the world may need modification. A little
inattention by Badapel is all it takes for our heroes to get
back into fighting size. Professor Barabas sends along another
invention, a Deep Freezer ray, which turns people into statues
for about ten minutes. A Deep Freezer cannon is soon mounted on
the Vitamini, and a car chase ensues. Since nobody stays either
shrunk or frozen for long, the situations are fraught with
oddness. A bird finally eats a miniaturized Badapel, and the
cannon freezes the bird in midair, too high up to reach. Lambik
downs it with his hat. The bird lays an egg in captivity, and
Wanda cooks it for breakfast, but when she cracks it a
genie-like Badapel emerges. A wind takes Badapel to the devil's
door at the South Pole, but he is rejected because he doesn't
have the right papers. He goes to heaven, but is also rejected
for lack of a good deed, so he goes down to Earth and teaches
Professor Barabas a lesson about not using his science to
create dangerous things. Barabas sees the light, blows up his
laboratory and takes up poetry. Badapel gets to Heaven.
