Analyses the evolution of children's comics in Brazil,
which started by copying foreign characters in the magazine
O Tico-Tico. That magazine opened the way for the creation
and distribution of Mauricio de Sousa's characters, the
most popular among Brazilian children. Discusses the
several short-lived initiatives for creating children's
comic characters in the country during the 1990s. Comments

"La Novela Gráfica como una Opción Sustentable para la
Industria de Historietas de Países en Desarrollo : El Caso
del Artist Brasileño Lourenço Mutarelli" / Waldomiro
Vergueiro, Lucimar Ribeiro Mutarelli. p. 105-113 in Revista
-- Summary: "Since Will Eisner's A Contract with God, the
comics market has seen the development of graphic novels as
a new and alternative format for publication. However, in
developing countries, due to economic and market
constraints, local artists have not always preferred
graphic novels as a medium for disseminating their work.
Foreign graphic novels can be seen quite often in
developing countries, but few native artists have really
tried to produce them. In Brazil, for instance, the artists
still prefer to create comic strips or stories for comic
books. Most of the Brazilian graphic novels are still
published outside of the commercial market, using the
alternative channels for production and distribution common
to underground comics and fanzines. Considering these
circumstances, the authors propose that the graphic novel
can be a viable option for the production of the artists of
developing countries. The Brazilian comics market, and the
career of Lourenço Mutarelli, one of its most distinguished
artists, are also analysed." -- Abstracts as printed with

discutida. -- Abstract: "Pornographic products have been a
significant part of the Brazilian comics industry. Although
lacking quality both regarding plots and graphic art, this
kind of comics has been very popular among readers, perhaps
due to the so-called 'natural sensuality' of Latin American
people. In a way, principally during the military
dictatorship period (1964-1985), pornographic comics have
been like a cry of protest against the dominating political
powers. Carlos Zéfiro, the most important author of
pornographic comics in this period, had to produce his
comics anonymously due to the fear of persecution by the
military and had his true identity revealed to the
Brazilian public only a few years ago. This author has
defined the main characteristics of this kind of comics in
Brazil, remaining as the model for all the others which
followed. For this reason, his work will be analysed in
more detail. The present situation of Brazilian
pornographic comics is also described. -- Abstracts as
