Summary: A new governess comes to teach Miles and Flora, and the presence of a mystery becomes evident. Though seemingly well-behaved, Miles has been expelled from school for being a "corrupting influence." A valet in the household, Peter Quint, has recently died, and the previous governess, a Miss Jessel, left the job and died soon after Quint. The governess begins to see Quint and Jessel around the house, and the children see them too, though they deny it. The ghosts participate in the sexual fantasies of the governess, but ultimately they are trying to possess the children.
