The Tender-Hearted Matador

The Tender-Hearted Matador, or, Duck, Lambik, or Your Goose is Cooked! / Willy Vandersteen ; translated by Nicholas J. Lahey and edited by Mark I. Smith. -- San Francisco, Calif. : Hiddigeigei Books, 1976. -- 1 v. : col. ill. ; 26 cm. -- (Willy and Wanda ; 10) -- Originally published in Flemish. -- Adventure story genre. -- Call no.: PN6790.N44W5T4 1976

Summary: On a dark road, Lambik interrupts two bandits as they try to steal a hatbox. The owner of the hatbox says "Santa Madolla!" and speeds away without even thanking him. When he tells Aunt Sidonia about it, she faints, then recovers to say that she had a niece, a fish peddler, who married a Spaniard years ago. The niece was never good at Spanish, and always said "Madolla" instead of "Madonna." She hasn't been heard from since the war. That night they go to the opera to relax, and a soprano named Carmencita Falasol turns out to be the missing niece. Falasol, formerly called Bertha, sings with a super-strong voice that causes things to break and blow away. She sings with her hatbox on the stage. The bandits, named Ramundo and Scramolio, put out the lights and steal the box. Wanda and Willy follow, and when the men stop to switch license plates Wanda and Willy find a baby in the box. The police come and the bandits leave in their car. The baby dismantles the other car, then hops a freight train. The baby, named Shrimpy, has super-strength. Meanwhile Bertha explains to Sidonia that Shrimpy is her son, and that she hasn't seen her husband, some kind of an inventor, since the war. Lambik reassembles the car and jumps onto the train, but when he gets off with Shrimpy, happens to hitch a ride with Ramundo and Scramolio. Lambik is soon dumped, and Shrimpy and his captors are on the way to Spain again. Falasol can't leave her concert tour, so Sidonia, Lambik, Willy and Wanda fly to Spain. In a hotel, the bandits wake Wanda and force her to prepare baby formula and wash diapers. Discovering that they have Shrimpy, Wanda follows them and gets herself captured because the bandits need somebody who can change diapers. Lambik, left alone, goes into a pasture to practice his Spanish by reading a warning sign about a dangerous bull. The bull isn't that dangerous, just depressed by a toothache, and Lambik knocks the tooth out. The bull is very grateful. Lambik then eats at a restaurant but can't pay, so is enlisted as a bullfighter by a promoter named Stubelardo, who pays his bill. Shrimpy's father is named Rondello, and the bandits besiege his castle intending to trade Shrimpy for a mysterious invention called the "T.A." Rondello intends to use the invention to end the cruelty of bullfighting, but the bandits are bull salesmen and fear a loss of livelihood. Wanda and Shrimpy escape from the bandits and join Rondello in his castle, and the bandits plant dynamite under it to blow up the invention. Meanwhile Sidonia and Willy are in disguise keeping watch over Lambik, and they bring Rondello to his room to try to talk him out of fighting the bull the next day. The bullfight starts anyhow, and Lambik struggles desperately, until the bull recognizes his dentist. The crowd is outraged at the cessation of hostilities, but Lambik won't kill the friendly bull. Left alone in the castle, Wanda and Shrimpy discover the secret of the "T.A." (a mechanical bull) and ride it out just in time to escape the dynamite. They arrive at the bull ring, and the judge decides it would be poetic justice to make Stubelardo and Scramolio fight the metal bull. Instead the two men grab Shrimpy and escape riding the robot bull, and soon are back in the bandits' mountain stronghold with Shrimpy as hostage. Falasol, flying over in an airliner, sees the situation and parachutes down to sing them into submission.

The Tenderfoot

The Tenderfoot / text by Goscinny ; drawings by Morris ; translated by Frederick W. Nolan. -- Montréal, P.Q. : Dargaud Canada, 1981. -- 47 p. : col. ill. ; 29 cm. -- (Lucky Luke) -- Translation of: Le Pied-Tendre. -- Western genre. -- Call no.: PN6747.M64L83313 1981

Summary: Englishman Waldo Badmington and Jasper, his butler, arrive in the Wild West to take charge of a deceased uncle's ranch. Old Uncle Baddy has left Lucky Luke a letter asking him to look after the nephew, if in Luke's judgement the nephew has what it takes. Waldo successfully survives the traditional initiation ceremonies at the railroad station and the saloon, and Luke decides to take them out to meet Sam the Indian, who has been taking care of the ranch alone since Baddy's death. Meanwhile, Jack Ready, owner of a neighboring but inferior spread, makes plans to seize Waldo's inheritance. Sam accepts Waldo, and soon a whole wagonload of English artifacts arrives, including a suit of armor and crystal chandeliers. Jasper and Sam engage in cross-training, and soon Sam is having bridge lessons and Jasper is dancing in circles. Jack Ready's men ride their horses into Waldo's house and destroy much of the furnishing, which Jasper chalks up to the behaviour of high-spirited young gentlemen, but when one of them spits on the carpet Jasper tenders his resignation. Luke talks him into postponing the decision. Jack Ready then fakes his own death at the hand of Waldo Badmington, and Luke helps Waldo try to run away. The posse catches them, and the sheriff locks them up for a trial. They are tried and sentenced to hang, but Luke escapes from the courtroom (Jolly Jumper was waiting under the window). Luke figures out that the bartender knows where Jack is hiding, and brings them both to Waldo's hanging as proof of innocence. Waldo demands an English-style duel, which ends with Ready giving up his ranch to Badmington and running for the train. Once things have settled down, Jasper resigns, gets a burro, and goes prospecting.

battleship Yamoto. And pilot Akito Tenkawa pursues a
mystery of his own as he searches the surface of Mars for
clues to his identity and the origin of his Martian
tattoos, which he has no memory of getting. Then it's space
ships, mecha, and interplanetary adventure as the forces of
