Summary: Mara goes out on the river Dol to
meet Bragon, Roxanna and the man who always keeps his helmet
on, and receives the conch. Suddenly she senses that her city
is under attack by the Jehzir, and they race back. Fortunately
the attack has been beaten back and the book of magic is safe,
so she can still hope to complete the incantation that will
keep Ramor from getting free. Getting the Time Bird, so they
can slow down time while she recites, is the next task. She
doesn't know where it is, but knows that the instructions are
written in runes in the heart of the Temple of Oblivion. As a
guide, she sends along a wizard named Bodias. Bragon, former
lover of Mara and possible father of Roxanna, was replaced in
Mara's affections by this same Bodias years before, and Bragon
is very jealous of the relationships both women have with "this
gigolo." The company of four (Roxanna, Bragon, Bodias, and the
helmet guy) sets out on the back of a hippopotamus-like river
beast called a Balant. The Jehzir, who are the guards of the
Temple of Oblivion, return to their desert fortress called
Numur. Faul, the wizard of the Jehzir, wants the book of magic.
Though his warriors failed to get it, Bulrog, who has already
taken quite a beating at the hands of Bragon and Roxanna, turns
up in Numur with a plan. The river goes under the desert, and
beneath Numur it is a sacred site to Jehzir priestesses. Bulrog
predicts that the questing party will turn up there, and when
they do, Faul feigns friendship. Upstairs they come upon
Bulrog, an apparent prisoner, and are tricked into letting him
accompany them into the Temple. Faul will thereby get the
secret of the runes, and in exchange Bulrog will get the death
of Bragon. Roxanna and the kid with the stuck helmet are left
behind, but she soon overhears that Faul and Bulrog are
springing a trap, and races into the Temple with her mysterious
champion. Inside the temple, the main menace is a colony of
parasitic little creatures who feed on memories. They stare at
their victims, whose minds rapidly leave them, and who soon
die. Roxanna comes upon the first group thus transfixed, and it
develops that her little blue furry is able to channel
Roxanna's energy and counter the spell long enough for them to
leave. Before they do that, however, the trickster Fol of Dol
turns up and riddles them
the answer to the meaning of the runes, which is that a
mountain peak called Heaven's Finger is the locus of the Time
Bird. Exiting the Temple, with Roxanna unconscious, the helmet
kid uses Roxanna's scorching whip to defend the group against
attacking Jehzir, and accidentally deals a fatal blow to Bodias
as well. Bulrog at first threatens to kill Roxanna, but then
relents and starts following the company at a distance. There
are but seven days left to save the world.
