Talon, Tom.
"Wingmate of Doom!" (Lt. Johnny Cloud) / Robert Kanigher,
script ; Jerry Grandenetti, art. 13 p. in All American Men
of War, no. 90 (Mar./Apr. 1962). -- Summary: Johnny leaves
his patrol when Tex spots an unknown Mustang about to be
ambushed by a Messerschmitt. It turns out the Mustang pilot
didn't need help, but when Johnny returns to his flight
it's surrounded by German fighters. Johnny's unexpected
return saves the day, and back at the base the new pilot
reports. His name is Lt. Tom Talon, and like Cloud he is
Native American. The other pilots observe the meeting of
the two men with these comments: "Look at the dead-pan way
those two are looking at each other!" "Just like Indians!
Never showing what they feel!" We learn that as boys the
two men played together on the reservation, and that
Talon's brother died during one of their games and Cloud is
unfairly blamed for the death. Talon has sworn to kill
Cloud, though the other men don't know this. On the next
mission Johnny Cloud makes Talon his wingman, demoting a
disapproving Tex to no. 3. Talon saves Cloud's life after
first putting it in jeopardy. The next day Cloud saves
Talon's life nearly at the expense of his own, and lands
barely alive in enemy territory. Talon lands to pick him
up, and they make it to safety even though being fired upon
by a German tank. Talon considers the fact that Cloud saved
his life to be payment of the debt for his brother's life.

Talons of Blood

Talons of Blood / Hermann ; translated by Kim Thompson and Dwight R. Decker. -- Stamford, CT : Fantagraphics, 1982. -- 48 p. : col. ill. ; 29 cm. -- (The Survivors ; v. 1) -- Includes a brief biography of Hermann, and an introduction to the series by Kim Thompson. -- Translation of Jeremiah 1: La Nuit des Rapaces. A western series set in a post-catastrophe future. -- Translated from French. -- Call no.: PN6748.J36T3 1982

Summary: Jeremiah is outside the walls when the raiders come and burn his village, taking as slaves everyone who isn't killed in the fighting. Jeremiah had been trying to catch a mule, which belonged to a loner named Kurdy. When the raiders pass by Kurdy makes Jeremiah hide, and thereby saves his life. The next morning in the destroyed village, Jeremiah finds the feather from Kurdy's helmet, and assumes Kurdy was one of the raiders. He finds Kurdy staked down and being tortured, and reluctantly helps free him. Jeremiah is put off by the way Kurdy guns down his torturers as soon as he gets the chance, but finally believes that Kurdy is not a raider. The two of them go to another town, called Langton. Jeremiah sees the head of the raiders, and attacks them alone. Kurdy saves his life, and the head of the raiders, W. E. "Fat-Eye" Birmingham, puts out the word to kill them both. Kurdy disguises himself as a woman to look around. He learns that Fat-Eye is selling the people from Jeremiah's village to the Indians, and interrupts the exchange, steals the money, and sends both the head Indian and Fat-Eye's man into the village tied up with a humiliating sign about slavery. The people of the town get angry and start planning to get Fat-Eye out of his tower. Meanwhile Fat-Eye is in his tower feeding his pet eagles, and doesn't take the rabble seriously. Jeremiah, without telling anyone, sneaks into the tower and gets caught. When Kurdy and the townspeople start their siege, Jeremiah is presented as a hostage. The siege is ultimately successful, Jeremiah is rescued, and Fat-Eye is fed to his own eagles.
