ideological component of superheroes and their role for
representing national identity and exporting American
values (Superman and Captain America specifically), and how
they have changed until nowadays, pointing out the post
9/11 effects in their representation and the changes they
have suffered across history. I also want to explore the
visual representations of Arabs in American comics after
9/11 and also the new Arab superheroes created within the
Arab world, and if they can be related to an hybridization
process within hegemonic aims." -- Call no.:

The American Way : What Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, and
the X-Men Reveal about America / by Joseph James Darowski.
-- 120 p. : ill. ; 28 cm. -- Thesis (M.A.)--Brigham Young
University. Dept. of English, 2006. -- Includes
bibliographical references (p. 114-120). -- Summary: Comic
book superheroes have become adopted into American popular
culture, and yet few have considered why these characters
resonate with Americans. The first comic book superhero
premiered in 1938 when Superman appeared on the cover of
the first issue of Action Comics. For almost seventy years
his adventures and the adventures of other costumed heroes
have been continually published. Batman soon joined
Superman as a popular costumed crime-fighter, and the early
1960s saw another generation of superheroes created that
would be embraced in American culture. Among this new group
of heroes were Spider-Man and the X-Men, who have proved as
popular as Superman and Batman. The never-ending narratives
of comic book characters provide a unique opportunity to
analyze how superheroes have evolved across the decades to
remain relevant for new generations of Americans. Superman,
Batman, Spider-Man, and the X-Men are the most popular
heroes, not only in comic books, but in other media
adaptations. An exploration of why these specific
characters have such resonance with Americans will provide
insights into American mindsets, ideologies, and
philosophies. Furthermore, comic books are uniquely
positioned to allow a new historicist reading, as the
characters' adventures have been published on a monthly
schedule for decades. A consideration of the alterations
made in the narratives to reflect the time periods is
inherently enlightening. -- Call no.: PN6725.D273A5 2006

-- English summary (from
p. 142): "Superheroes vs. Supercensors. The violence and
irrealism of superhero stories promptly attracted the wrath
of the supervision committee. Lug (the publishers who
translated the Marvel series into French) received several
warnings, then finally withdrew Fantask in 1967. Four years
later, the monthly Marvel was banned from sale to minors.

-- Ann Arbor, Mich. : University Microfilms International,
1982. -- 21 cm. -- There is no abstract, but this is a
summarizing passage from leaves 24-25: "The three main
themes in the Superman myth are his origin, his superhuman
qualities, and his dual identity as Clark Kent. The origin
or rebirth and freedom from the mother are in the
background and the main dynamism in the myth is the
Adlerian 'will to power.' Superman is the flying, potent
phallic man who has no need of women, yet women (like Lois
Lane) fall at his feet. This points to the latency
reaction-formation of denying sensuality, and is tinged
with revenge for the mother's Oedipal rejection. Socially,
Superman puts his omnipotence in the service of law and
order, or the collective Superego. Id urges as personified
in psychopaths and criminals are mastered. Love and
approval from society is the reward. The socialization is
further manifested in the duality with Clark Kent. Clark
Kent embodies the feeling of powerlessness and inferiority
of the Oedipal and latency child who in transforming to
Superman is magically reborn as the most socially powerful
adult." -- Chapter 3 compares 10 Superman stories from the
1940s with 10 Superman stories from the 1970s. -- Call no.:
