The Shooting Star

The Shooting Star / Hergé ; translated by Leslie Lonsdale-Cooper and Michael Turner. -- Boston: Little, Brown, 1978. -- 62 p. : col. ill. ; 30 cm. -- (An Atlantic Monthly Press Book) -- Translation of: L'Étoile Mystérieuse (1942). Call no.: PN6747.H4T52813 1978

Summary: On a hot night, Tintin spots an extra star in the Great Bear (Big Dipper), and the people at the observatory are acting strangely. Tintin sees for himself in the telescope that a massive fireball is going to hit the Earth next morning. Rats begin deserting sewers and car tires begin exploding from the increasing heat. A strange prophet named Philippulus begins hounding him. Next morning there's an earthquake, but the impending collision turns out to have been a miscalculation. Spectrographic analysis of the fireball/meteor shows an unknown element, a new metal which the astronomer Decimus Phostle names "phostlite." Tintin becomes part of an expedition to find a fragment of the meteor which landed in the Arctic Ocean. Phostle and Captain Haddock are also part of the expedition. Upon boarding the Aurora for the voyage, Tintin finds a man has tried to damage it with dynamite. Other mysterious happenings are found to be the work of Philippulus the prophet, who has sneaked aboard, but is soon retrieved by men in white coats. As the departure ceremony is taking place, word comes of a rival expedition having sailed the day before, and the Aurora leaves in haste. The other ship is named the "Peary," and is finance by the Bohlwinkel Bank. The sea is rough and that night in a gale the Aurora is almost run down by a ship running without lights, the "Kentucky Star," under orders from Bohlwinkel. Next Bohlwinkel gives orders to all ports in Iceland not to refuel the Aurora. Haddock meets an old friend, Captain Chester, who helps them refuel anyhow. A week later the reconnaissance plane spots a column of steam from the meteorite and also sees the Peary in the vicinity. The race is on. Aurora gets a fake S.O.S. and investigates it, so that the Peary sights the meteorite first. Tintin takes their airplane ahead and parachutes onto the rock to plant the expedition's flag just before the boat from the Peary arrives. Tintin and Snowy stay on the rock to guard their flag while the plane returns to the ship. Next morning they hear explosions and find a series of mushrooms rapidly growing and bursting. Next they find a giant apple tree grown from an apple core Tintin had thrown away the night before. The meteorite starts to tilt and Tintin is knocked unconscious by a giant apple. The seaplane returns, but cannot set down nearby because of the disturbance in the sea. Tintin and Snowy are rescued from a rubber dinghy as the meteorite sinks, and Tintin remembers to bring a lump of phostlite for science to examine.

Summaries:
"Killer!" p. 3-8 -- Summary: Michael Rockson has a party and invites lots of people. When security says the people are all gone, Michael finds a nude dancer, Billy Joe, in his bedroom naked. He demands that she leave, and she does. Then, while Michael is playing with his porcelain dolls, he hears a sound and investigates. His lamas and his dog Toto have been brutally cut up with a power saw.

"Killer! B Side" p. 9-14 -- Summary: Michael Rockson tries to call security, but the telephone line has been cut. He then sees one of his bodyguards come in, and he seems to be talking to someone else. Michael then sees a hand with a white glove reach out and kill the bodyguard with a power drill. Michael runs to his safe room, but the killer is there before him, with a blowtorch. Unmasked, the killer proves to be Michael himself, who then ignites the first Michael's hair with the blowtorch. Running toward the pool to douse the flame, the first Michael stumbles, and the second Michael trips over the first Michael and falls into the pool, which is dry. The first Michael climbs down into the pool and discovers that the dying second Michael is actually Billy Joe, who thought she'd have made a better Michael Rockson.

"Doctor Boy, and Mr. Gore" p. 15-26 -- Summary: Boy Gorgeous, the transvestite rock idol, is talked into trying a recreational drug against his better judgement. He soon feels terrible, but his manager says he has to go out with the winner of the "Miss Win-a-Date with Boy Gorgeous" contest, Vanessa Willing. The drug makes Boy very hungry, and also sexually interested in Vanessa. After dinner, they take a walk in the park. Suddenly Boy's body grows big muscles, his teeth get long, and he eats Vanessa. Later his manager says anybody can get kinky with a groupie, and sends him to a photo shoot. The transformation happens again, and Boy runs to a punk music club, and starts eating the all-girl band. He wakes up in jail, and the policeman says not to worry, it was the drug that did it. The policeman asks for a date, but Boy says he's "developing a taste for the ladies."

"Prance" p. 27-38 -- Summary: Rockfort, the Rock Detective, is hired by Baron von Funkenstein to find a dangerous missing "person." This person is a scientific creation made of body parts from Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, and Elvis Presley. John Lennon's ears had yet to be attached, but more importantly the monster does not yet have a soul. The soul of Otis Redding was to be the next addition. The monster's name is Prance. Rockfort gets a message to Prance that he has John Lennon's ears, and Prance comes to Rockfort's office to get them, locking Rockfort in an oven as he leaves. Rockfort blows the oven open with the speakers in his shoulder pads, and causes Prance to short-circuit on stage by making him listen to his own music with John Lennon's ears.

"Like a Holy Virgin" p. 39-46 -- Summary: Madollar is very pregnant, and comes to detective Rockfort to ask him to find her lost virginity. He takes the job, but it's a tough one because she can't remember what it was like, or where she lost it. Rockfort asks Madollars husband, but he says he only sees her at parties. He thinks she might have sold it to the head of her record label, and he says people sometimes leave things in his sauna. Then he suggests asking a guitarist named Stink. Stink has it, but though she's willing to pay anything, he still has his integrity and burns it. Rockfort then takes the virginity of another young woman and gives it to Madollar, who is happy and doesn't know the difference. Suddenly Madollar is glowing and dressed in white. The Pope's Rolls-Royce pulls up and she leaves with him to have her baby and be a really big cult figure.

   "Maracas" (Memín) / argumento de Yolanda Vargas Dulché ;
   dibujó, Sixto Valencia. 32 p. in Memín, no. 11 (1983). --
SUMMARY: Carlos, Ricardo and Ernesto eat in a Chinese
restaurant. Memín goes home to get some maracas, figuring
that no cabaret will let them in because they are so young.
Memín plans to pretend they are musicians. The white boys
sing, however badly, and Memín holds it together with his
natural rhythm. Meanwhile, Carlos's mother Isabel
("Chabela") is in a tough underworld cabaret talking about
how she hates her life and how her husband abandoned her
when he got rich, though Carlos doesn't know this.
Eventually the four friends arrive at the same
establishment and find Chabela fighting off a drunk
customer. The man hits her and Carlos wades in, knocking
him down. The man pulls a gun and tries to shoot Carlos,
but Isabel gets between them and is shot. Carlos throws a
bottle and apparently kills the man. Isabel is not badly
hurt and tells her son to run before the police get there.
