Batman, Scarface : a Psychodrama / writer, Alan Grant ;
artist, Charlie Adlard ; lettered by John Costanza ;
colored by Grant Coleash ; separations by Jamison. -- New
York : DC Comics, 2001. -- 45 p. : col. ill. ; 26 cm. --
"For years, Scarface has been one of the most brutal
mobsters in the Gotham City underworld. But he is a
different sort of wiseguy, unique among the criminal
community. You see, Scarface is a ventriloquist's dummy,
the mannequin mouthpiece of mild-mannered Arnold Wesker. It
is believed that Scarface's savagery and disregard for
human life is merely a sympton of Wesker's fractured
psyche. But what if that outlet were removed from the
ventriloquist's possession? What if the puppet were buried
and left to rot? Would the evil truly disappear, or is this
just the beginning of a darker, deadlier tale?" (back
cover). -- Superhero genre. -- Call no.: PN6728.B37G642

Al Jaffee's Mad Life : a Biography / Mary-Lou Weisman ;
illustrated by Al Jaffee ; colors for new illustrations by
Ryan Flanders with Douglas Thomson. -- New York : It Books,
2010. -- 226 p. : ill. (some col.) ; 24 cm. -- Summary
(publisher's description via SkyRiver): Al Jaffee's work
has enlivened the pages of Mad magazine since 1955 and made
him a cultural icon, but the story of his life has yet to
be told. Six-year-old Jaffee was separated from his father,
uprooted from his home in Savannah, Georgia, and
transplanted by his mother to a shtetl in Lithuania, a
world of kerosene lamps, outhouses, physical abuse, and
near starvation. He was rescued by his father, returned to
America, taken back yet again by his mother, and once again
rescued by his father, even as Hitler was on the march.
Finally back in America at twelve, he struggled with
challenges at least as great as those he had met in Europe.
But his artistic ability saved him: chosen to be in the
first class to attend New York City's High School of Music
and Art, he found himself in a movement that would change
the face of humor in America. -- Call no.: PN6727.J3 Z5W4

Trailers / Mark Kneece, Julie Collins-Rousseau. -- New York
: NBM, 2005. -- 1 v. : ill. ; 24 cm. -- (ComicsLit) --
"Josh Clayton's mother has killed a man and left Josh in
charge of disposing of the body. The trouble is, the body
will not stay put. From dogs to low-life trailer park
denizens, Josh's life slips even more deeply into hell as
he attempts to keep the corpse under wraps. Josh, a
sensitive teenager, attempts to persevere in the face of a
morbid dilemma: guilt and fear over the crime conflict with
his reluctant devotion to his mother. In the meantime he
has the additional task of taking care of his younger
brothers and sister while enduring the ordinary minefield
known as high school. As presure on Josh builds to critical
mass, he suddenly finds himself involved in a relationship
with Michelle. She tries to understand him, and to her
credit, she almost does. Josh is forced to take a difficult
stand against his own mother or never be able to move on.

beats German contender Hans Hein in Yankee Stadium, and
later Hein complains that the American didn't play fair.
Two years later World War II is in progress and Hans Hein
is in the German army. Kid Ryan is taken prisoner in
Europe, and the Germans arrange a rematch as a publicity
stunt, in a P.O.W. camp. Ryan hasn't been training or
eating right, and the fight goes badly for him. In most
rounds he is saved only by the bell. At the end of the
fight, though, he floors Hein with one punch as his fellow
P.O.W.s burst in with guns. Ryan had been playing for time
and keeping the Germans cheering loudly while a tunnel into
the German arsenal was completed, and the escape plan is a
success. -- Call no.: PN6728.2.N3S75no.12

"Wingmate of Doom!" (Lt. Johnny Cloud) / Robert Kanigher,

of War, no. 90 (Mar./Apr. 1962). -- Summary: Johnny leaves
his patrol when Tex spots an unknown Mustang about to be
ambushed by a Messerschmitt. It turns out the Mustang pilot
didn't need help, but when Johnny returns to his flight
it's surrounded by German fighters. Johnny's unexpected
return saves the day, and back at the base the new pilot
reports. His name is Lt. Tom Talon, and like Cloud he is
Native American. The other pilots observe the meeting of
the two men with these comments: "Look at the dead-pan way
those two are looking at each other!" "Just like Indians!
Never showing what they feel!" We learn that as boys the
two men played together on the reservation, and that
Talon's brother died during one of their games and Cloud is
unfairly blamed for the death. Talon has sworn to kill
Cloud, though the other men don't know this. On the next
mission Johnny Cloud makes Talon his wingman, demoting a
disapproving Tex to no. 3. Talon saves Cloud's life after
first putting it in jeopardy. The next day Cloud saves
Talon's life nearly at the expense of his own, and lands
barely alive in enemy territory. Talon lands to pick him
up, and they make it to safety even though being fired upon
by a German tank. Talon considers the fact that Cloud saved
his life to be payment of the debt for his brother's life.
